OVER !!

Has anyone ever heard one play say to a team mate "over" ..?

I was watching a Vets game yesterday - ball heading towards 2 players - winger says to his centre-forward colleague "over" - and the centre-forward leaves it for the winger

(winger then crosses it and a goal ensues … uproar!)

I had to ask the manager of the team that conceded the goal what the fuss was about - he told me saying "over" was what players at a higher standard say rather than "leave it'

I'm 40+ and have done 3 seasons of park football, academy football and now step seven … had never heard this !!

Has anyone else !?!?

Whatever they say, be it "leave it", "mine", "over" etc it isn't an offence unless it is said solely to distract or deceive an opponent. Even then the IDFK would be for stopping play to caution the player for USB.

We seem to be the only country with the perpetual myth about "putting your name on it"!

Agreed with @ASM , it is nothing more than a myth that you aren't allowed to say 'leave it' or words to that effect. You only penalise if you believe they have said it for the purpose of distracting an opponent (or in this case, stop the opponent from playing the ball) as the offence is not saying 'leave it' but distracting an opponent.

This aspect of unsporting behaviour is one that I find that county level players have no real idea about, the amount of times I hear "he can't say that it's in the rules", if I say it distracted nobody it goes right over their head. I even had one argue the other day that that certain words were in the laws and therefore fine, when I offered to get my book at the end for him to show me he declined oddly enough.

I've used that one - I invite them into my changing room after the game and challenge them to find what they claim is in the book - so far nobody's accepted my invitation!!

Players will argue black and blue they are allowed to shout their name. It's in the rules ref! You try and explain as above as to it being about deliberate distraction rather than what is shouted but most times it falls on deaf ears.

Not come across "over" before.

i've heard "over" a thousand times in my playing career, as in "step over" meaning to let the ball run for a player behind

i get the constant gripe when i'm refereeing local league football about players shouting "mine", "leave it" etc. I've never penalised it but players continue to complain.
