Over enthusiastic coach

Thought on this.

I refereed a game last week, its was 1st v 2nd but 2nd were only that far up the league due to kind run of fixtures although they had won 5/5

The better team took the lead and the manager of the team losing was clearly getting wound up as he wasn't used to losing.

He was shouting at his players press press press and when one did run 15 yards to win a tackle he was shouting "thats what i want thats what im talking about come on come on" (while jumping up and down like a mad man)

I had a word and told him to calm down as i was worried his behavior was going to rub off on his team and anyone steaming into a tackle could break someones leg if a fraction late.

A parent said it was "just passion" but i think i was right to nip it in the bud before it got out of hand.

Did i do the right thing ?

Yes I think you did. Sometimes a quiet word can put things into perspective. Did he calm down afterwards? Football is passionate and people can get over excited. A calming word can have great effect on somebody to check their actions. He might have got so excited he started to swear at you or the kids and then a proper decision would need to be made.

From what you have said I'd of just kept quiet as he hasn't done anything wrong (yet) IMO. There are times when to get involved, when you hear things like 'snap him' or 'take him out' or things like that but some coaches do do strange stuff, but not enough here from what you've wrote!!
Love a bit of passion, but its a fine line sometimes!

When the parent said its just passion i said to him and i love it but i didn't want it spilling onto the pitch.

He calmed down yes until i gave a penalty against his team then booked a different player for saying "i hope you miss this penalty and i hope you break your legs"

YHTBT. A line I tend to use, particularly when as Senior AR, where is kind of behaviour does impact on my game is, "I know it's exciting, but please just settled down in there [the dugout]".

Based on the OP, I’d happily let that continue. If if it does spill onto the pitch, there’s nothing malicious etc in what he’s saying. He just seems like a keen and invested motivator for his side

Didn't want what spilling over, exactly?

I'm in the 'he's done nothing wrong' camp here. He can jump up and down and get enthusiastic all he wants - until he actually crosses the line- dissents, mouths off at an opponent, that sort of thing, I'd leave him alone. It's not golf - there's no requirement to stand there and clap politely when something interesting happens

(I'm joking! Nothing interesting happens in golf)

His team were flying into tackles, no fouls committed but for a short period of time there were a few that if a fraction later could have seen an injury to a 12 year old child.

It’s a foul or it’s not Spud, football can fluctuate very quickly between fast and slow, tough or easy. Sounds like your over egging this a bit to justify your interference, I think the consensus says you should have kept your powder dry for worse occurrences.

I didn't make a big issue out of it, i just said to him manager calm down please.
Honestly, if he’s as passontiste as you’ve made out, unless he’s swearing or something just leave it. If he can show passion to encourage his team, he could certainly do it in the other direction if you essentially ask him to calm down when doing his job. You wouldn’t tell fans to calm down when supporting their side, there’s no need to with a manager
