Just wondering how many fixtures Level 4 refs usually do in a season. I’ve done 22 so far and want to check if that’s a lot.

I'd say 22 middles is probably above average at the moment. Most of the currently active 4s I speak to have said they're getting fewer middles last season and this season than they were previously - quite often they're only getting one a month.

Don't think it has changed much over the years, and I've always said to those going for L4 to assume they will only get one step 5/6 middle a month. Might pick up extras through rearranged games, cry offs, etc, and FA / CFA competitions, but not to go into it assuming you'll be in the middle every week as it is very unlikely. From memory my typical breakdown was around 1 to 2 middles and 6 to 7 lines a month.

@ARF

My experience this year is I have mainly had middles at step 5/6 as a level 4 and lines have been limited.

6 or 7 lines a month?! 😳 I've gone through and worked out my monthly averages for each season I was active at L4 - only ever happened twice that I had five lines in one month, same goes for middles.

Middles I would say average is about 2/3 a month. Depends on the Pool your in an the amount of officials in the Pool. Start of the season with the FA competitions there is generally more.

I think this season will have been an exception to the rule for most level 4s and most will have done a higher than average number compared to most seasons as there was such a shortage for particularly the first half of the season.

I think there's several things at play here with number of middles compared to lines - I don't have many level 3's in my county so have only done 6 lines in total this season. I am also duel pooled and I know there are quite a few now who are, but have found that I've had an increase in middles due to this too. It'll also depend on number of step 3/4 clubs within a distance from you too I'd think. Lots at play! Having been a level 4 a while though, traditionally it used to be 1 maybe 2 middles a month, then 3/4 lines. On occasion I went sometimes 6 weeks without a middle back then.

May be a London thing, there are a huge number of step 3 and 4 clubs within easy travelling distance of me. I also got a lot of late replacement appointments, presumably because of the proximity to so many clubs.
