The Ref Stop

Last weeks ref...

SM

The avuncular one
Got to admit I am getting a little bored of doing the pre match equipment check and having lots of mismatched coloured tape and non matching under shorts sometimes even facial piercings. You instruct then to take them off only for the inevitable "last weeks ref said it was okay..."

My favorite response is: is last weeks ref here? No, get the tape off and when last weeks ref has you next tell him "this weeks ref said he should start doing his job properly"

It's bad enough having to enforce this rule, but it's made 10 times worse when not everyone bothers.

Anyone else have any tape/equipment related tales?

The Ref Stop
Yep. Funnily enough it happened to me last week. Most of the away team had blue sock tape over claret socks. 'Sorry ref, we normally play in blue and we bought 20 rolls of blue sock tape.' I replied, 'Well that was bit silly, when you think half of your games are played away.' They took the tape off. Yesterday I had a blue player with black undershorts come up to me before the equipment check and ask if the undershorts were okay. I said 'If you had to ask then you probably know the answer.' Good old last week's ref eh!

Same here, I get the 'last weeks ref' all the time too! Most recent one was a couple of weeks ago! Brought the teams in for the pre match handshake and saw that 4 of them had earrings in, told them to they had go. The coach really wasn't happy and told me to stop being 'picky' before asking why it wasn't an issue last week

I'm sick and tired of 'last weeks ref' making it more difficult for those of us who do things properly. Do your job!!!

I had a GK come to me yesterday; "Ref, do you see anything wrong with my appearance"
My answer; "Yes the sock tape"
GK; (Jokingly) "You b*****d, I knew you'd say that."

Like @Ross said, even if last weeks ref did everything as he should have, the teams will still try and find a way out of removing the under garments and tape by telling you that last weeks ref said it was fine!

Whilst I am fully aware that some refs do not enforce this as they ought to, I think players will lie through their back teeth in order to get one over on you. Don't always assume last week's ref didn't do exactly as you are doing and they are simply trying their luck. I had one last season, precisely as described in OP, this ring doesn't come off mate, so last week's ref said as long as I tape it up properly, its fine. I knew last week's ref personally as I have worked in a team of 3 with him on numerous occasions; there was absolutely no chance he played with a ring on. I called his bluff, "you had XXXX XXXXXXXXX last week didn't you? Miracle of miracles he turned, found some scissors in the medic bag, cut off the tape and slipped off the ring. Liar lair pants on fire.

I still play U16 and this happens a lot. Whilst my respect for referees has risen since I qualified and I sort of inspect my kit myself, we still have those who try persevere with wearing a white thermal under a yellow and black shirt and keep their earring in until the ref tells them to take it out, then comes the 'but last weeks ref' argument. Would just be nice if everyone reffed the same (even when league rules clearly say it) to stop these problems, because I know some of the refs in our league don't care and won't want to cause a fuss.

Back in the day when I was playing between the sticks, I had completely forgotten to remove the stud from my ear. Defending a corner early on, ref jogs up with 'Get rid of the ear ring son' "Oh, sure, sorry ref"

Got one glove off when he blew for the corner to be taken - b3344d!

Ended up losing the stud but not conceding a goal at least!
