The Ref Stop

Last minute swap

My preference is fo OA men's football, but I often work Saturdays* and so can only officiate on Sunday's and round here that means youth football.

Not too much of a problem as I've got myself established as a regular on the U16s league.

On Wednesday I got my match allocation - a top of the table clash (1st v 2nd) at a ground I haven't done before. Have done the away team a few times when they've been at home. Been looking forward to the game all week.

Arrive at the ground, introduce myself. "I think they're going to ask you to swap games. Can you go and have a chat with Pat"

Pat is called over, who explains that their U13 side is in a County Cup game, and the ref has let them down. As the county cup takes precedence, they would like me to ref their U13 game rather than their U16 game.

I agree, but must say I was a little disappointed - the U16 game promised to be a high tempo, reasonably skilled, challenging game - what I give up my Sunday afternoons for. U13 football doesn't always do it for me.

As it happens, the cup game was good, away team won 9-0, but good standard of football from all, and I did enjoy my afternoon. Did find myself glancing over to the U16s game on the adjacent pitch - it did get a bit heated, ref was not often up with play, etc. Did think to myself, at least they'll be pleased to have me back ref-ing them next time I'm allocated to them ...!

Question - who is Pat? Is he anything to do with the CFA or just the team manager?

Ther reason is that clubs should not re-assign referees to just because a referee for a more senior match has not arrived. You were appointed to do one match, and this was not "uncovered".

You will probably be alright, but in York area we have three different CFA's. If you had moved from a league under North Ridings control to do a East Riding cup match you could be reported to North Riding for failing to referee a match....

"Pat" was/is the club secretary for the home club.

I have emailed the ref sec for the league and the county cup to explain, haven't yet heard anything back.

What is slightly annoying is that after the game I did a bit of goggling of the home team - just to see if anyone had posted a match report or photos (I'm a bit vain like that!) and found a Facebook post from Saturday in which they were asking for a ref for the U16s game I was due to do: I.e. They knew on Saturday, but didn't contact me to discuss before hand. (Would have at least given me chance to check competition rules.)

I don't think I'll get in trouble - the Sunday league (and, it appears, the cup) is so short of refs, they can't really afford to alienate someone who is prepared to ref games ...!

As Lincs said, you should referee the match that you've been appointed to. It's down to the club to find someone else to do the other game.

the club have put you in a tricky spot though... appealing to your better nature to risk getting a slap on the wrist... not really fair on you is it

While not knowing the protocol of appointments in your area I tend to agree with previous posters that you should have stuck with the game to which you were originally appointed. Club officials should not be asking referees to switch matches. Was there not a referee available for the 13s game? Where did the referee who subsequently referee your original 16s game appear from?
