The Ref Stop

Is it fair?

I can see this becoming a trend to get players sent off unless there is s significant punishment for Gonzalo Jara.

The Ref Stop
Such practices, aimed at provoking opponents, are far too common in football. I get so frustrated by "know it all" pundits who claim this is how the game is played and you have to every thing you can to gain an advantage. Maybe that is how they actually played the game but it doesn't make it right. I've seen plenty if instances of "gamesmanship" even in youth football where, I suspect, it is instilled by coaches often at the expense of basic footballing skills.

I still can't figure out what the blue player is supposed to have done. Pity the blatant dive wasn't addressed.
That sort of provocation is exactly why it's essential to be able to suspend players on video review for incidents the referee has missed.

I just don't understand the opposition to use of video for after match sanctions. You obviously don't want it in-match, like rugby league where it takes 3 minutes to know if someone's scored or not, but players dive because they know how hard it is to spot from one angle.

Who's opposed to it?
As you'd probably know, the HAL (Aussie top league for all the colonialists on here) uses post-match review for diving, among other things, and players have been suspended. It's implemented very bady with zero consistency, but it's there. The dive in this video is disgraceful and worth of a suspension itself.
I'd love to see video panels get more aggressive on diving - fortunately, the problem of players squaring up then dropping to imitate a hit (or at a slight touch of the forehead) hasn't really come up down under, but its disgusting when it happens.
But then, there was one in the WC when it happened and the player received a second yellow and most people were saying the yellow was harsh! People don't have a clue what they want!
Personally, I think the only way to deal with divers is to start docking competition points if the dive changed the result of a match.

@CapnBloodbeard Jara (red 18) was soft slapped by Cavani (blue 21). It was a instinctive reaction by Cavani. The referee was going for the card before Jara went down. The referee had just spoken to Jara. Poor refereeing IMO to turn your back on two players that you have just spoken to.
It looks as though both players were cautioned.

Here is a better video

In France we use it, players regularly get caught after the game doing nasty things

Jara wasn't cautioned on that play. Or at all in the match for that matter.
I think you'll find he was cautioned.
There's a distinct show of two yellows by the referee and the CONMEBAL site also records a caution to Jara at that time.

Hrm. I didn't see it on there post-match, but I see that it's there now.

Curious.

It was also (to my recollection) not indicated during the game with the on-screen graphics.
