interference from a water bottle...

I didn't have a match this weekend so went to watch a game and saw a potential incident that made think.

During the game, Grey's GK placed his water bottle on the goal line, given he wasn't really looking what he was doing as he was watching the game I assume it was unintentional but what would happen if a player hit a shot beating the gk but the waster bottle prevented a goal?

From my understanding as this would be outside interference a drop ball would be required. You can imagine the uproar from the attacking team if the goal was denied but as this was during the game with the ref watching play up field how could this be avoided?

What if the GK did do this on purpose?

Ha, not very! But it may happen one day and the more I pondered the more I created scenarios in my head!

What if a shot came in hits the cross bar and bounces down, BUT hits the bottle and bounces in the net when it would have bounced out. Maybe the attackers will start strategically placing bottles as well. It'll be like playing a match at recycling plant!

What if the striker pokes the ball past the keeper but s only just slow enough to cross the line but the bottle is full and stops it? Its a possibility but quite unlikely, its a dropped ball yes but i think MC would be out the window! Just be vigilant on these kind of things :P

I would hope that in this instance the defending team would have the sportsmanship not to contest the drop ball!

At my Supply assessment last Wednesday I pointed out to the AR that the goalkeeper had placed his water bottle just behind the gaol line against the post. I suggested he move it to prevent it causing issues later in the game.
