I've had this a few times when the throw in is near to the subs on the line. As the player picks up the ball I call him a couple of feet on to the pitch for a quick word, then tell him "thanks. Now you can take the throw!"
Many years ago I had a player at step 5 tell me "He's going to do something illegal! I'll tell you what when he's done it!" because an opponent who was coming on as a sub was lining up to take a free kick on the edge of the penalty area. He was delighted to be able to tell me "he's not allowed to take the kick straight after coming on!" and not so delighted when I explained what the Law actually said.
