Injured player playing people onside

During my game today ....
Yellow CB falls down injured during a clearance of the ball.

As he is down I played on as I deemed it non serious but as I play on the ball is fired back over to a player (who would have been offside had the player not been down). He runs through on goal and the keeper saves.

Just wondering what you guys do when a player is down and could be playing opposing players onside, do you stop play, or just play on?

Many thanks :)

Hi Sam, good question! By the sounds of it you made the correct decision. You are not obliged to stop for an injury, especially if you've had a quick check and deemed the player is okay. Play continues as usual and it just so happened the injured player was in that position. In my opinion it was a good decision to let play go on but I'd be interested to see what everyone else says :)

You did good. Out of curiosity, with the ball safe did the downed player require treatment or did he get up as if nothing had happened?

He needed a quick splash of water and he was back on his feet. A little limp for the next 10 minutes but after that he seemed fine. Thanks guys :)

There's your answer then. If his team are complaining about not stopping the game for him, you can rughtly point out that you are not obliged to stop the game unless it is serious injury, in which case he would have been and unable to continue and substituted.

Common sense dictates that if a defender is down injured and is not making an attempt to move forward or sideways to prevent keeping the opposition onside, and is in a position on the FOP where the majority of his half is now "onside", then STOP PLAY for him to be removed.

It's always easier to be safe, than to have a goal scored followed by mass confrontation/assaults etc.

He must have been genuinely injured if he limped for 10 minutes afterwards.
