The Ref Stop

hypothetical question - abuse pre-match

SM

The avuncular one
Okay let's have a hypothetical scenario! This sort of thing never happens, I am sure!

On arriving at a match, your on you way into your changing room when a player who you sent off earlier in the season recognizes you. He shouts "Oh c*nt, you cost me £10 and a suspension last time you ref'd us. Hope you brought your f*cking glasses and guide dog today". The incident is witnessed by team officials from both sides. The player is quickly whisked away into his teams changing area by a very worried looking official.

What happens next and what is your basis in law for your actions?

I'd seriously be considering a pre-match send off, although the laws state that you can only enforce disciplinary sanctions from the moment you enter the FOP.

Quickly run on the pitch as he's saying it? LOL

ten quid seems cheap for a send-off!

Once he's out of the way, a quiet word with a team official or his captain perhaps.

Certainly put in a report about it.

Correct, you cannot enforce anything until you step on the pitch.

This is a tricky one as it is not 100% covered in the laws. I wa trying to think of difficult scenarios which fall between the gaps of the laws.

The best I could come up with was: tell official what you have heard, that them the player in question is not playing today and is required to leave the vicinity of the fop, which includes changing areas. Misconduct report will be submitted and the teams conduct in assisting in removing player from vicinity is being noted.

Under law 5, the ref has the authority to allow or not allow any persons to be present in the vicinity of the fop.

That was the best I could come up with.

my understanding of the laws is you can caution/send off anyone involved in the match from the moment you arrive at the ground. Therefore I would give him a pre match send off......and further financial punishment!

Law 12 (in the interpretations) indicates that the referee has the authority to to take disciplinary sanctions from the moment he steps foot on the FOP until he leaves after the final whistle.

You can send off pre-kick off (which is covered in law 3) but I don't think you can before setting foot on the FOP.

I do not diagree with you or Law 12(!).....but that does make my recent FA tutor wrong. Just hope I don't find myself in this situation!!

Put it in the misconduct report, tell the manager and captain that the player will not be playing. If he is a starting player he may be replaced in the lineup by a sub, if he is a sub he may not be replaced.

Here is a true example of what I witnessed.

Me and another Referee walking to adjacent pitches to do a game each. Player from his game warming up says to team mate "we had that cu*t last week and we've got him again this week". Other Referee says "YE won't be having anyone sunshine" and sends him off. Quality.

SO, we arrive at the ground, the three of us walk out on the pitch, check it for dangers eg glass/stones etc. Check the markings and goals, nets if they are up or being put up, then walk back OFF the FOP to our changing room.

Having set foot on the FOP can we Red someone for OFFINABUS in the changing rooms?

My "game" starts when I receive the fixture, and I'll report anyone for misconduct if they deserve it beforehand!

It's very difficult to send somebody off if you don't have a teamsheet with their name on it. I think you'd have to tell the club official/secretary that the player in question will play no part in the match due to his earlier conduct, so he should save himself some bother and not name him on the teamsheet in the first place, and also send the player home for everyone's sake so that you don't have cause to abandon the game in the first minute!!

You hope that the team official has enough sense not to dress the player who is at a real risk of being sent off in the early minutes if he doesn't watch his behaviour. Otherwise, don't let it effect your pre-game routine or your game at all. Consider sending in a report to the county at the end about the abuse as well.
