The Ref Stop

Howard Webb: Can anyone explain?

The Ref Stop
I was watching on sky, Webb saw it, pointed at the incident... Nothing given.

Curious as it seemed nailed on. Perhaps Webb couldn't believe what eto had just done.

Was also a little surprised at his handling of the oscar challenge on Lucas. Lucas should have been cautioned for his reaction, Oscar was a lucky boy not to see red.

I agree Lucas should of been cautioned for his reaction, but what about Eto on Henderson?

It does on the face of it seem that he's missed a couple today, the penalty one was the biggest surprise for me as he was 5 yards away looking right at it and even seemed to gesture at Suarez as if to say he made a meal of it.

The Eto one was a booking for me as I don't think he was out to really hurt Henderson, but from the limited amount I saw of Oscar's challenge it looked a bad one and he should have gone. But I only caught half a glance at it, I think Webb was to far away from it.

Was clearly a penalty but in the video eto looks like he sort of pulls out of the tackle, which is why I think that Howard webb got it wrong.

What are your thoughts on the Hazard penalty shout with Lucas. I think definitely not a penalty but would be interested in hearing other peoples opinions.

Well according to the wonderful world of Gary Neville, Lucas was 'well within his rights' to react like that... Strange things come out of his mouth.

Interesting one...Sky pundits said no penalty as Hazard left his leg out, MOTD pundits said pen.
In my eyes at full speed I would have given a penalty. Lucas made an attempt for the ball but cought the man. Without the benefit of replays u gotta to be giving a penalty haven't you?!

On the Eto'o Suarez penalty claim, is there not a case to award Liverpool an indirect free kick for impeding the progress of an opponent? Brendan Rogers used the term 'obstruction' in his post match interview, so in law that can't be a penalty kick can it?

to be fair suarez did make the most of it, so I think that is what put webb off it, how over dramatic he made it look

I get that, however had Webb deemed there to be an infringement, what would it have been? To me it looks like Eto'o did nothing more than impede Suarez, for which you can't give a penalty, it has to be an IFK.

Wonder what the reaction would have been had Webb blown and awarded IFK to Liverpool? I also wonder whether in Webb's mind it's easier to 'sell' a no penalty decision than to award an IFK to the attacking team in the penalty area?

There was contact between the two so it cannot be impeding the progress on an opponent. If a foul was given it would have to have been either for kicking or tripping depending on how you see it.

I think our colleagues at the very top of our game have been instructed for several years to see every unfair challenge by defenders in the penalty area as a DFK offence, therefore a penalty kick.

When was the last time you saw an IFK to the attacking side inside the area on a televised domestic game for any kind of obstruction or high foot near the head by a defender? You get the odd one for goalies time wasting or picking up from a pass, but never for impeding/obstuction

You are right, you never see obstruction (impeding progress of opponent) given. There are times when it is bloomin' obvious, nothing. It's become extinct as a rule?

if you're right, topman, then the referees should develop a collective backbone and tell the powers that be to go feck themselves

makes their decision making easier.......and as a bonus, no organising 11 players between the posts etc for a 6 yard ifk

There's all sorts goes on at that level for the good of us all though, I like the linesmen's signals filtering down to grass roots in recent years, makes pre-match easier, and of course as you step up the proverbial ladder, you're perhaps already aware of what's being done at your next level?

I don't want to speak for him, but although he didn't say it directly at a an RA meeting where he was speaking on Thursday he seemed to accept that he's made some mistakes lately.
