Looks like ref accidentally hits player in the face then player pushes him away instinctively

Incredibly harsh and one the ref could have managed

Personally, think it's very harsh.
The player is jogging past the ref who has put his arm out to indicate a throw, I assume, and struck the player whose instinctive reaction it to "bat" the arm away.

Tell me a ref who hasn't accidently put their arm out and struck a player and immediately apologised/laughed about it with the player.

What happened here is poor refereeing and what will happen somewhere else, is an overturned dismissal

Most likely, the referee reacted as if startled by the collision

There must have been some language involved here, there's no way a referee at that level is sending off for that.

Apparently a Southend player has been quoted as saying he was near the incident and said to the referee "he just hit you, what you gonna do about it?"... and then the red came out.
