The Ref Stop
I can only assume for DOGSO.

I'm not in a position, based solely on this angle, to sell DOGSO here.
Both tangled (no one in particular at fault I believe) and with that, other players (attackers and defenders alike) have caught up and would negate the "last man" part as in covering defender has clear ability to take and/or challenge for the ball at that distance.

Are we really giving this as a red for DOGSO?

I’d see the safest / best decision here as a defensive free kick for the original challenge.

If you choose not to give that, then at the moment of the foul on the attacker, there’s no covering defender in shot. I’d see it as touch and go whether that nearest defender could get back and impact play whilst the attacker turns towards goal. Touch and go and will be complaints whatever the officials decide.

If you think that's bad look at the penalty decision at 1.00:

Shoulder to shoulder equals a penalty?
Not quite got to the penalty but the disallowed goal for offside...
Not sure about that to be honest.
I know the assistant is far closer and more in line but have a look here... appreciate attacker is behind the defender in middle but ive circled both where the attacker is and where the defender who i think is playing him on...

If you’re giving an attacking free kick, I’m not sure how it can be anything but DOGSO?!
The next closest defender is a good 8 yards behind, the ball is right next to the players feet and even the goalkeeper isn’t anywhere near his goal line.
Now having seen the actual footage and this screen shot, it is clearer DOGSO than I first thought.
However, im still leaning on giving a defensive free kick than an offensive one.
Im sticking with they were tangled and through no one in particulars fault but defensive free kick (if anything) is not a red card offence and if you see it later and feel you got it wrong, sending someone off is lot worse than getting it wrong defensively.

Oh absolutely. No disagreement from me that a defensive free kick is probably the best outcome here. But I just think once you give the attacking free kick, not sending off for dogso would be wrong.

I’m still not convinced red once you go attacking foul. Even before the ‘foul’ the attacker hasn’t got control of the ball. He’s not even standing up due to the slip

For me the four considerations are not met.

The attacker is not going towards goal and i don't even think he has posession.

What do you think of the penalty decision?

It’s ’likelihood of gaining possession’.
Take the defender who commits the ‘foul’ out of the picture and I’m not sure how we could come to the conclusion that the striker would do anything but pick up the ball and begin moving towards goal.
All a matter of opinions so I’m not dismissing your opinion, but for me it’s a dogso every day of the week (IF you’re giving a foul - again I think a defensive free kick is the best outcome)

Regarding the penalty, it does look harsh on the face of it. Hard to be certain on how much / what contact happened on the legs of the players if they tangled, but I certainly don’t think the shoulder to shoulder is a foul

FOr the OP, its one of those incidents that i would stop play for match control, slow the game down, prevent afters etc. There is a bit either way but all 'footballing contact'. And if i do stop play, its a defensive free kick which has the least impact. But in isoleation, I'd let play continue.

For the pen, nothing there for me.

Courage is a good refereeing trait, but both these decisions look to be manufactured or misplaced courage.

There's always a third option...

Most refrees who have been around long enough have done this at lease once; finding something that is not there for a KMI. At grassroots, the rest of the game is a nightmare.

The way that step 1 refs are evaluated there's absolutely no need to look for/find KMIs. Arguably at all national league system (UK) games the making system has moved away mark inflation from finding supportable KMIs.
The referee obviously feels it's an attacking foul and as such once he reaches that conclusion the only outcome available is DOGSO

Is it red for DOGSO? The drop down below the score said second yellow. Did the ref caution for SPA?
