Goal kicks

Last weekend I was referee for a youth game, in the final few minutes the ball was kicked out by the attacking team for a goal kick. From the goal kick the ball was played short and wide to the left back who consequently touched the ball inside the box. As this was a situation i had never come across before I awarded an indirect free kick to the opposing team. After the game finished I found this was the wrong decision, according to the LOWG the goal kick should have been retaken. For future reference if a goalkeeper takes a goal kick and touches the ball again before it has left the area, should i order a retake or award an ID free kick for touching the kick twice? Thanks

This is the age old exam question. If the keeper kicks it but it doesn't leave the area ad anyone touches it - retake. If however, the ball leaves the area and the freak gust of wind, that always catches us out, blows it back in, and the keeper then touches it IDK - I think.

Just to expand on that for understanding, it's a corner because the ball has been placed over the goal line, it doesn't matter if it is between the goal posts and underneath the crossbar because you can't score an own goal directly from a restart!

You could say it wasn't out of the area if it's close enough to say it wasn't.
