The Ref Stop

get a ref on tv

I've been getting annoyed lately at the lack of understanding if the LOTG by "pundits" on MOTD and Sportscene.

Don't you think there should be a qualified referee (probably retired) to help explain decisions and laws? I know some mistakes are completely wrong but for debatable decisions.

At the weekend, the one that really frustrated me was when the guest said the referee was correct to only show a yellow but he felt I could have her "reckless" and therefore a red card. So annoying.

Opinions?

I think purely for entertainment reasons it would never happen

Pundits could argue for hours about a decision but with a ref there they would ask him, he would say whether the ref was right or wrong and that would be the end of that

BT Sport tried it briefly, not sure if it was this season or last. Mark Halsey was at the games and the commentators would go to him after any decision they felt needed explaining.

He was taken off after a few games, rumour has it that the Premier League didn't like the fact that he had the audacity to be critical.

"Reckless" = red card, is one of my pet hates as well.

Robbie Savage said it in relation to Ospina challenge on Sunday

Reckless was a word long before the lotg got hold of it.

As i've said before on here i'd be more concerned about qualified refs seemingly ignorant of the lotg than having a go at the pundits who are not overly familiar with the lotg terminology

Having said that, anyone referring to the premier league as the premiership should be strung up :)

Although I agree to an extent @haywain about the referees being ignorant part, these pundits are former players most often who have been at the top level. Also, they're being well paid and some of the stuff they suggest is ludicrous. Savage suggested awarding a penalty, booking a player for the foul and also booking the player for simulation. What an idiot!

In my experience, they are partially to blame for the poor respect towards referees with their shoddy and inaccurate analysis of decisions with little/no understanding of the laws applied. Young players listen to and notice what these people are saying and if they spout drivel then we face the consequences on the pitch. And yes, good referees should apply the laws properly and educate players, but these guys just make it worse for us and our reputation because "the crisp man said it on the telly"

Someone told me about this yesterday. Sky and bt sport are all about entertainment. Nobody wants sense or correctness, they want drama, controversy and argument.

Sky is to blame for a lot in football including why idiots are encouraged to slag off refs every week. It draws in viewers.

Money is king.

We don't have any former referees live commentators in France but we do have two of them working as consultants in TV or radio shows.

Joël Quiniou was a GREAT ref, three world cups, truly an example
Bruno Derrien is a more ambiguous character, really nice ref but not great, his career ended badly and he wrote in 2009 a book about the whole french system where he tells all kind of stories about the people at the top of the system. This book sure helped me understand why the french refereeing is in such a bad place now.

Anyway, their input is always a big plus to the debates

Perhaps we could open a sub-forum on here, for reporters/journalists/presenters/pundits (that have been verified) to ask our views on events. As we all know, we're a concise, decisive bunch on here, that always agree on incidents :)

the sole reason i cancelled my BT sport was beacuse of Michel Owen, what a complete and utter tosser that man is!!

Always amuses me that when Sky preview the Grand Prix, they never show any skillful overtaking manoeuvers etc. It's always just a series of crashes.
Shows what the Sky Billy Bunters want to see...

if you think that you obviously cant remember, if im being honest andy gray or his clone wannae be craig burley, they were simply referee haters

However in context Haywain RS was even more wrong.

Said it should have been a foul, yellow card and if "referee deemed it reckless then it would have been a red card"

It would never happen as having a ref there would put an end to debate as such. You couldnt have an expert in their field giving a definitive answer on an incident puts an end to the debate. It makes better TV for Souness and Redknapp to argue for 10 minutes whether it was or wasnt a penalty. As has been said on here already its all about what people want to see.

Not sure it WOULD kill all debate. Incidents such as majority of penalty shouts are always judgement calls.

"Produced" properly by the television companies it would be useful. Ref could dispel the usual myths and then debate could centre on the real issues, once all the untruths were no longer spouted!

Good stuff and still applies today - perhaps even more so today.
More football on TV, but a lot more "analysis" as well!
