As a 49 y o banging my head against a glass ceiling I applaud the guy for making what will doubtless beca very unpopular move in the corridors of power.

Age discrimination is illegal under EU law. FIFA and UEFA have always got around it by being based in Switzerland, a country that has its own age discrimination law that applies to public law not private law (i.e. to employees employed by the state, not private organisations).

No idea how the likes of Germany and Italy have been able to get away with it for so long though. A referee's age should be irrelevant as long as they have good sight and can continue to pass the fitness test.
