Funny drop ball situation

I refereed a U13 game today and there was an amusing incident that occurred. A defending player went down injured in the penalty area and I immediately stopped play. I restarted play with a drop ball. The attacking player agreed to kick the ball back to the goalkeeper. The attacking player then preceded to kick the ball into the goal. Technically I suppose the correct decision would be to award the goal however all parties agreed to take the drop ball again. What do you guys think?

I'd say wrong decision. Kick off and walk the ball in net if team wanted to be sporting about it

Should have been a goal kick. A goal can't be scored directly from a drop ball (brought in at the start of last season).

The fact that he offered to kick it back means it's just an uncontested drop ball

What off thewall said about the changes to Law 8 means if directly kicked into the goal off a drop ball then it's a goal kick, as was the case in your game. It's if they pass it it around a bit that it becomes hazy because it isn't truly direct then.

Yep, if it was uncontested then it's a goal kick.

If touched by another player, you're only option is to award the goal, and hope the 'sporting sense' comes out and the team that conceded are allowed to walk the ball into the net.

I know this has happened a few times, especially on TV but why can't you give a goal kick as you can't score directly from a dropped ball (as per LOTG)? Just wondering as I have only just become a level 8.

Spot on HullRef. Uncontested drop ball kicked into goal is a goal kick, or corner if into your own goal.

Unfortunately, as with the recent Norwich incident, it's not always as clear cut. (I know it wasn't a dropped ball restart, but many commentators were saying it should have been a goal kick 'because of recent changes to the Law' - numpties!)
