EEEK, i have just been appointed to my first middle with NAR's

I know one of the NAR's is a L2 referee so no doubt he will have lots of tips and advice for me but if anyone has any tips they want to share ahead of time i would be grateful.

Also, any protocol I should follow here?

We might need a little more information. What type of game is it, is it County appointed, youth, adults, etc.?

In terms of what to do on the day, make sure you give your assistants pre-match instructions. There are a number of examples on here as to what people say to their assistants. It'll help you work together as a team and make it look as though you have worked with neutral assistants before!

Sorry, its an OA Sunday game although is the top division.

I will take a look at some of the other forums posts

Are you sure it is a level 2 assistant? Sounds odd that a referee who officiates on the Conference National / North / South and lines on the FL or PL is the following day running the line on a Sunday League game? Great for him if he is, but level 2s assisting at that level must be few and far between.

Sorry he's a Level 3 and is the leagues referee secretary. He is aware I am looking to get on the promotion track this season and I have asked if he could come and watch some of my games to point me in the right direction so to speak so I expect him coming down as a NAR kills two birds with one stone

Fair play to the lad, have to respect that kind of dedication from your league secretary!

As stated above there are pages and pages of advice on briefing to assistants on this forum. Do a quick search. I am sure Brian Hamilton posted some very comprehensive stuff on the subject last season. As with most things refereeing, with time, experience and practice you will stumble upon and plagiarise yourself a great speech!!

When i have been AR the referee normally says to both us AR's " I'll go with all your decisions, have a good game" plain and simple.....

that's interesting @mikedn ... I've never had a speech that lasts less than 5 minutes?

I suppose, even if you aren't being 'observed' then its good to do the whole speech and get used to it so its natural ...

some of the refs ive been with have a laminated piece of card also with bullet points on it - think that's a good idea

Yes I agree - occasionally if the three of us have worked together plenty of times then the speech might be a little briefer!

I'll worry if one brings a projector and screen onto the pitch :-)
