"dropped points"

A favourite phrase by the media (and others) when it comes to certain teams is "dropped points". Might just be me, but I don't think there is a more disrespectful and incorrect term in our great game than this one. Teams can be expected to win yes, but we all know that both teams start the game with 1 point each so where exactly are the points being dropped it if ends in a draw? It suggests a pre-determined outcome and an anomaly where something has went wrong. It talks down our game our teams and our players. Enough already.

Couldn't disagree more.
A team at the top playing a struggling team or at least a team they'd be expecting to beat will consider that 3 points are on offer. Presumably their opponents will consider that 3 points are on offer too. The team expected to win will feel they've dropped points if they fail to whereas the other team might feel that they've gained (at least) a point if they win or avoid defeat.
It's football life. There is no "disrespect". It's just the truth.
As for "both teams starting the game with a point" - that's just ideological rubbish.

Agree, in a lot of games one team will go in as a very clear favourite, for example Liverpool are 3/10 to win away at Southampton today. If they don't win it will be dropped points, that isn't being disrespectful, rather they are massive favourites so anything other than a win, no matter how well Southampton play, will be viewed as dropped points.

Must've been a slow Saturday in Ronnie's house

As has already been pointed out, its a very accurate phrase for the top teams when they play the bottom sides, particularly if the dominate the game.

It's also relevant during the season run in when the teams competing for the league and one slips up.

And finally, a team that is leading in the final 10 minutes and throw away a two goal lead, that is textbook "points dropped"

Slower than a hearse at a snail funeral.
