Dropped Ball

The Referee Store
As long as the ball touches the ground before he picks it up it's okay.

What happens though if after picking it up he smashes a long punt directly into the opponents goal? Is that considered scoring directly from the drop ball?

ooooh - good point from Supermonkey !!

don't forget to nicely ask the GK not to smash it up field until you've got up the field yourself :)

Asked a senior referee in my association and he said that in the LOTG, a goal cannot be scored "directly" from dropped ball, however, if a player takes a touch and then shoots or a keeper picks it up and shoots then it is not the same phase of play and therefore the goal SHOULD stand since it was not direct. The Laws don't mention anything about it being touched by another player unlike an indirect free kick.

It doesn't have to be touched by another player but the first touch cannot be the shot.

Why not? Where's it say that? It's in play when it touches the ground
You cannot score direct from a drop ball.
LOTG p32 said:
If the ball enters the goal:
• if a dropped ball is kicked directly into the opponents’ goal, a goal kick is awarded
• if a dropped ball is kicked directly into the team’s own goal, a corner kick is awarded to the opposing team.
