Mancs derby; ref team in black and so is De Gea .. why do we bother at grass roots with Law 4 when the PGMOL doesn’t bother ...?

The Ref Stop
Different, but the same, rules.
Premiership is all about the show, the £££££ and the exposure.
Grass roots rules do not apply

It does seem absurd that european refs are back to the coloured socks as to avoid a clash yet this can happen.

All you can do, as ever, is concentrate on your own game

De Gea wears black every weak.

Why the officials could not have worn another colour, I've no idea - but it happens every week in professional game.

Last week PNE GK wore almost identical kit to QPR outfield players.

Aiden McGee (Sky and QPR fan/programme contributor) wrote that he asked Alan Wiley about it and his reply was that he was going to raise with the referee!

Non event for me, when is the referee ever going to get confused for the keeper? I know it isn't right, but at that level the PL choose what everyone wears, it is taken out of the match officials' hands.

You can't compare it to grass roots, as no one is allowed to wear black there. Whereas at professional levels keepers and outfield players are allowed to wear black. Referees only have 4 colours, there will be cases where they can't possibly wear a kit that doesn't clash with either team or goalkeeper. For example, team in yellow, team in red, one keeper in black and the other in green. You are well and truly snookered.

I'll just pop along my road and ask one of the current SG his thoughts on the Black / any clash and if it really matters to him!!

Do you think he knows me??

I’m looking forward to a sneaky double on the blue in January, the bounce didn’t go well for them last time and it left them a little red. I think they’re a bit green with envy at the moment!

Can't agree with much of that Rusty - sorry! Impact on the game is irrelevant - when is anyone going to get confused by different coloured sock tape or a tiny piece of different coloured undershirt peeping out under a player's neck - but we still have to enforce those.

In this instance Man U in red, Man C in blue with GK in green, so Oliver and his team could have worn yellow - sorted.

It IS a problem at grassroots as my post last week about an academy game where team insisted on wearing black illustrates and we regularly get stories on here of teams wearing black.

This sort of thing doesn't help us when we're telling a player off for the heinous crime of wearing wrong coloured sock tape

As Rusty says, the referee has next to no control over colour in Premiership matches, cannot be compared to grass roots, same as Euro games, your colour is given to you, and same say FA cup or Scottish Cup final, kit is given to you by powers that be.
Its like saying grass roots should havd goal line tech and everything else, same rules, diff rules for them

Don't know what all the fuss is about.

Played for my veterans team on Sunday. Due to an administrative c@ck up, we were in white, opposition were in white. Ball was white. Then it started snowing.

A great game of football. Whites won 2-1.
Apparently the the game was allwhite as well!

Goal line technolgy is just a TAD more difficult to sort out at grassroots than shirt colours though!

My main point is that the referee doesn't have a choice, they are told what to wear.

Sock tape and under sleeves were causing problems though. I can remember one game years ago where there was a handball decision and the referee got it wrong as all he saw was two arms bedecked in the same colour, the difference was one was an actual shirt sleeves the other an under sleeve. And with sock tapes, the players caused that themselves, as some were putting so much tape on it was almost changing the colour of the sock.

Not much different to when both teams turn up with the same coloured socks. I'll let them play if neither has a change, but I make it absolutely clear that I will not be apologising for any incorrect throw ins, corners, goal kicks, offsides, etc. If I'm looking and down and just see a leg clad in black kick out I'll be guessing. Not that different to shirt sleeves, especially on offsides and handballs, and to a lesser extent sock tape where there is loads of it. In contrast, has anyone ever, ever, seen a keeper get confused for the referee?

Lee mason in black tonight at Palace with Watford gk in black

Agree with above, I be surprised and indeed amused to see him leap up at a corner and clutch the ball out of the air
