citeh v bayern

Level 7 Referee
just turned over to it after watching 'chariots of fire'

first thing i saw was citeh winning a throw and, presumably because it was obvious / asst ref had put his flag up (out of shot), the referee didn't bother to signal a direction

i'm in the habit of signalling every throw though, when the direction is 100% obvious, I can see the 'sense' in not signalling a direction.

i'm assuming that this is one of those things that fifa refs can do but something that i'd get pulled up on by an assessor........or is it?

then citeh got their penalty and the munich player got his red - liked the fact that the ref gave himself a few seconds to make his mind up (listen to his asst/s perhaps) and the apologetic way that he sent him off

...and now aguero has kicked the ball away after the whistle has gone for offside and no caution....do they make allowances for stadium noise, i wonder

bayern equaliser. bayern player clearly holding the citeh player at the business end of the wall tho no way the ref could have seen it - was the asst behind the goal ever looking at it?

still, 11 men citeh 1, 10 men bayern 2 - you have to smile :)

well done, Aguero, well done Citeh

In terms of the non-signalling for a throw;

I very rarely signalled throw-ins during my time at 4. On the whole, I was working with competent NAR's who would follow my pre-match instructions and give the decision. If the throw is in their 3rd, why would I signal? More chance of crossing!

My third, I'd signal any that weren't 100% obvious, but leave the rest to NAR, with a 'downstairs' signal to them.

Middle third in front of dug-out's, I'd normally signal to ensure no controversy!

Same as @haywain - I make a habit of signalling every throw - getting it agreed downstairs before going upstairs ... also like my CARs to signal every throw too so I know they are in the game

Saw that and thought the exact same. Maybe a caution would have dented his confidence or made him hesitate for the next couple of balls and *NOT* bagged his hat trick.

If it is obvious I very rarely signal either... It's no point really. A good referee imo is one that can go unnoticed whenever possible and using my whistle rarely/not signalling obvious throwins is one of the ways I do that... Obviously I make sure the players know in there (small words with them when I pass by) but unless I'm needed I won't raise my profile
