Anyone else think that the Fabianksi red card is a poor call? I certainly think so!

The Ref Stop
How can there be debate, when you think logically?

Fabianski fouled Diame, who managed to stay up and get a shot away.
Foy, who was too quick on his whistle, had blown up already. Because Diame got his shot away (and nearly scored), the FK denies an obvious goal-scoring opportunity! Easy decision for Foy.

However, it was a handball (but Foy couldn't possibly see it, so no fault). The issue, for referee development, is how quick Foy hits the whistle. Delay, advantage, and then decide whether you'd pull it back or not!

To be fair I'm only going off the Vine, didn't see the resulting shot.

I'm with Dan, far too quick a whistle. But that said...

Missed handball and a push from williams which caused the collision with fabianski and the handball. Foy made his kind up very quickly.

Happened very quickly. Difficult one.

Do you mean it's a poor call because he missed the handball? If so, then I agree.

But given he misses the handball (and it's hard to blame him for that) how is it not an obvious goalscoring opportunity, especially given how close he comes even after being fouled?

I'm confused as to how he was too quick on the whistle. If he is sending off for DOGSO, how can he consider playing advantage? If a defender handballs on the line, do you wait to see if it drops to a attacker to slot it in and let the DOGSO go?

Yes!

So what happens in the situation last night when you wait for advantage and the defender slides in from behind while chasing him, wipes him out and is then also up for a DOGSO? Not arguing by the way........... genuinely interested!

Based on last night, I'd say what defender? He was clear of Williams. If he wasn't, I wouldn't be playing advantage!

The problem for me is that once he gets that shot away the advantage has accrued and you can't (I know some would) go back; a shot at an empty net from an acute angle is more advantageous than a free kick from the corner of the penalty area.
In DOGSO situations where the immediate
opportunity isn't better than giving the foul it's far easier to delay the whistle.

I am thinking that the Ref is thinking the Striker would have had a better angle to shoot from if the GK had not slowed his progress down - this would be the advantage and - for me - perfectly OK to pull it back and send-off

Thought Foy had made a good decision as it happened but the TV replays show it a little differently. However, you only get one go at decisions like that and my view is, Foy called it right based-on his position and viewing angle. He was a bit quick on the whistle though and the more interesting question is what would have happened if Sakho had scored instead of hitting the post!?

BTW I'm not a fan of Chris Foy. Once saw him book Chris Westwood (Hartlepool United) instead of Mickey Barron (who had already been cautioned). Google Westwood and Barron and see why it was a "should've gone to Specsavers" moment.

(And I've just realised that incident was 10 years ago)

It was a very obvious goal-scoring opportunity - but the fact that Diame got a shot away means that Fabiasnki shouldn't really have been done for DOGSO, especially as he created the opportunity anyway by running out like a plonker.

Please find the (Playing Advantage in the penalty area) thread
And another row can start !:)

Solely from the vine footage, I wouldn't have sent keeper off, I would allow advantage and then book keeper at next break in play for challenge on the grounds of breaking up a promising attack. Don't feel he's last man as defender is in close vicinity, not an obvious goal scoring opportunity either as the WHU striker isn't in full control of the ball to be fair either
