Bobble Hats

I prevented a couple of players playing today with Snoods and one outfield playing wanted to wear a Bobble Hat but I said it wasn't acceptable but after the game I realised goal keepers do wear caps from time to time , any difference and was I right to prevent the player from playing with a Bobble Hat on ?

The Referee Store
You are correct. Players are not allowed to wear headgear other than the GK. Well done for not being 'last weeks ref'

As long as the hat presents no risk to the safety of the wearer or any other player, and is the same colour, it should be okay. I dont think Law 4 says anything abound outfield players not being able to wear headgear.

A player may use equipment other than the basic equipment provided that its sole purpose is to protect him physically and it poses no danger to him or any other player. (LAW 4)

Think it would only be allowed if it was for protection. Being cold and wearing a bobble hat is not protection. A cap is an ultimate no no as heading a ball with a cap could cause some damage.

players are allowed to wear headgear for religous reasons. My CFA sent out guidance last season to say referees can wear black hats in adverse weather conditions. On this basis I would allow player to wear beanie hat or bob hat in black or same colour as shirt.
Also how often with a low sun do I wish I could wear a cap to referee instead of having to hold arm above eyebrows, to enable me to see clearly looking into sun.

So a hijab / niqab is solely for safety puposes? Ever seen a team of Sikh's play in all turbans?

Hence why the wording of the LOAF was changed - mainly to allow women's football in the Middle East (and ME countries womens teams) to evolve.

See the KSA netball team disqualified from the World Cup as they refused to REMOVE their head-dress?

Its offering protection from the cold. By your reasoning gloves would also not be allowed? GKs not allowed to wear caps either, to protect their eyes from the sun?

My advice

1) Players do not wear hats of any sorts
2) Excluding goalkeepers - they can wear a baseball cap if necessary.
3) Players can wear headgear if it is for protection (e.g. Petr Cech and Wayne Rooney when he wore that black headband)
4) Referees ideally should not wear any headgear either, unless of course it is for protection
5) Assistants referees = same as no.4, however like goal keepers, can wear a baseball cap if necessary.

Take it or leave it.

Just a question, did you pick this up on the equipment check or just happened to notice before kick off?

I accept that , as you say, that you are just giving advice, but seems very inconsistent in my humble opinion.

Gloves (for all) and baseball caps allowed for GKs and ARS but players can't wear beenie hats?

Hi Paul - I assumed this was aimed at me? IMO, it is not inconsistent. It is common practice that goalkeepers and assistant referees wear baseball caps (even though this is now dwindling) and outfield players and the referee don't wear anything.

But as we have both said, just my advice.

Id just say no to stop any arguements, if they said then why can GK? Id just say they can use their hands but you cant, theyre specialised positions, get used to it

If you don't like the cold football is not the game for you. Protection normally means to protect you from harm. Cold is not really going to cause you any real harm, considering the players are actually warm during the game. Furthermore, I must point out it was you who said 'protection from the cold' not me so I have no problem with gloves.

If people want to wear gloves and are prepared for the micky taking they will receive, leave them to it! Mean referees not allowing gloves!!! :)

Nobody actually said that though did they...
