Today I supposed to be a County Div Three game but got a call to do a Div One match late last night. No problem, looked at the sides and no rivalry etc so figured it should be a good match.

First half passes with out comment just one booking for a snide comment off the home sides centre forward. Away side took a surprise lead but home team scored a great leveller, all set up for a good second half but....

Second half was unbelievable, constant arguing over the decisions, arguing with opponents over accusations of diving, arguing with each other etc etc I could go on. At times I had to laugh when i got grief over tackles that nearly cut players in half and blatant pushing. At the end I had ten in the book and probably could have had more. Only about two players even bothered to speak to me at the end and yet I can't say I would change any decision I made today.

Sat at home now having a beer after doing my paperwork and just running everything through my head, need to relax. Was one of those games when I felt like why do I bother.

Chin up and forget it. You did your job, how the players chose to play the game is not your problem. Enjoy the beer and get out next game and enjoy that!

I should say I'm not down about it, more why bother when the people you're dealing with are, for want of a better word, idiots lol. Beers are going down well :-)

...and here was me thinking that my five cautions today were quite a lot

2-0 to the away team at half-time, 7-4 to the home team at full-time

I was looking through the scores yesterday and was thinking that yours was probably match of the day. Maybe it was, but just not a good match to be in the middle!

Chin up though mate, to quote the film the fifth element: it never rains everyday.

I had a bizarre one yesterday myself. Bottom division cup match, 5 cautions (4 foul tackles, 1 adopting aggressive attitude) plus 1 red (dogso - hand ball). At the final whistle it was hard to put all the cards shown together with the attitude and sportsmanship of the players throughout the game (which was great). Both sides happy, me slightly confused.

Was there anything that you may have done that could have contributed to the somewhat strange turn of events in the second half? How about anything you didn't do that you could have to fix it? It's important, after a strange match like this, to consider your approach and see if there was anything you could do to fix it.

I put it down to silly season! Players become nuts towards the end of the season

Which we do through upholding the laws of the game, applying techniques to control the match and this means on occasion the cards coming out.

I'm not saying that we don't, I'm asking whether that was, in fact, an effective technique (I'm betting it wasn't or it would have been stopped earlier) and if there was anything the OP thinks he could have done better/not done to make it turn out more positively.

"You're allowed to challenge for the ball ref? Shoulder to shoulder?"

"Yes shoulder to shoulder, not hands in back!"

Only every game...
