High level u20 AR I was. Interesting one discussed after the game.

Captain went down injured off the ball. Ref stopped the game. Physio came on. Magic spray for the captain and also a quick squirt on the thigh of a team mate.

Opposition ask why the captain didn’t have to leave the field. Ref says to them when two players on the same team are injured they don’t have to go off. He is experienced and was vehement during the game and after.

However, I think he’s misunderstood the LotG here, or a poor translation... it’s only if the two teammates have been injured in a collision they don’t have to go off, right?

He could have asked both players to leave the FoP here IMHO but the right move would have been just to get the instigator captain off the FoP...

A friend was marked down for a very similar situation, after he made two teammates injured in separate incidents go off after treatment. Observer claimed it showed a lack of empathy for the game.

The observer coordinator agreed with the observer and said by 'spirit of the game' he should have let them both stay on.

Obviously they should both go off according to law, otherwise a teammate could just drop down once he's seen his teammate needs treatment.

Except, as others have said, that's not quite accurate. The law actually says:
Exceptions to the requirement to leave the field of play are only when:
  • a goalkeeper is injured
  • a goalkeeper and an outfield player have collided and need attention
  • players from the same team have collided and need attention
Two players on the same team getting injured in separate incidents does not qualify as an exception.

I can see the argument that it's a little unfair that a team has to play two players short when they haven't done anything wrong but @bester's point is well taken - letting them both stay on when they haven't collided could easily lead to teams trying to manipulate the situation.

This is poor from observer and coordinator. Marking down for following the laws of the game. It would have been much better as a coaching point (without the markdown) to suggest to the referee to apply the spirit of the law after assessing if the team is not trying exploit it.
