    Timekeeping and 4th Official

Hi Ref team, I’m reffing my first cup final Monday night and have a 4th official to boot which is great. Having not had one before, how do I communicate to them (and the NARs?) how much time I’m going to add on? Is it as simple as keeping tabs on time and using a few fingers to signal just...

    Mmm satisfying!

Point taken, but sometimes it’s nice when a particularly irritating player allows you to (appropriately and deservedly) remove them from the game

    Mmm satisfying!

Interesting perspectives - to clarify, I’m quite happy with the process I went through - 2nd yellow for AA, esp as it was shouted at another player right in front of me. For me, I wouldn’t be dismissing if it’d been more discreet/in passing - my bar is a little higher. I felt he had to go as I...

    Mmm satisfying!

Had a pearler on Saturday - 30m in, gobby player leaves a very high lazy foot in a tackle albeit without aggression - easy caution. As I call him over he starts shouting at an oppo player and calls him a tw*t which clearly upset the oppo (and me) so thought, he can have one for that too...

    Unusal one

Yeah that was right as per ifab.

    Giving a ‘holding’ decision

Given there’s been so many posts, it allays my concern I may not have 100% nailed the original decision. For what it’s worth, the player lent a hand down and across a bit (but deliberate) in more of a ‘oh FFS another goal’ rather than Suarez style. Given game was as good as gone and we’re not...

    Giving a ‘holding’ decision

Ta for the responses. For some context, defending team were already down 3-0 and getting battered in the first half at this point. As there was a lot of appeals for a lot of things, and I wasn’t 100%, I paused, gave a penalty whilst stating I’m going to check. I feel that going over to and...

    Giving a ‘holding’ decision

Thanks for the feedback - really helpful. Can I press on the ‘holding decision’ question? Is there the same expectation throughout the levels that you give a decision and then overrule only if you’ve got sound NAR advice to what you gave?

    Giving a ‘holding’ decision

Incident from today where we had a bit of a goalmouth scramble and ball pops up towards/in the goal, where defender handles it to keep it out. Lots of shouts either way, defending team saying it was already in (probs to avoid pen/RC). I wasn’t 100% either way so blew to stop the game, and...

    Blackburn v PNE - advantage/yellow

Tom Bramall having a great game in the middle at the moment. One thing I wanted to clarify - PNE player chops down BR attacker who is running at goal ~40yds out. Ref plays good advantage which comes to nothing and then goes back to caution PNE culprit. Given it shouldn’t be advantage and a...

    First Match - Report

Just on the language point, I’d agree that shouldn’t be tolerated at that age. Try talking about use of language in a prematch chat (just 30s or so) to set expectations, including in front of coaches etc - that then gives you a reference for if there is any poor language/dissent going forward...

Referee Tone (e.g. Brooks @ Newcastle - VVD DOGSO)

My thoughts exactly - seemed aggy to me, not authoritative 👍

Referee Tone (e.g. Brooks @ Newcastle - VVD DOGSO)

Here's one that I personally struggle with - I've seen numerous examples either via YouTube or running the line, and now here on Sky Sports...
