    Sin bins

Life doesn't allow me much time on chat forums, so this feels like a late response.... I've probably used the IDFK two or three times without a caution. I take the point of accuracy of law, but at my level I consider my job is to allow 22 people (plus subs) to enjoy a Saturday afternoon of...

    Sin bins

Well, we will have to agree to disagree. And until an assessor tells me he'll make me eat my whistle if I do it again, I'll carry on if/as appropriate because it works.

    Sin bins

Why do I have to give a caution "in law" for an IDFK offence? Do you give a caution for offside? What I am doing is perfectly OK "in law" and works really well. If it controls the game, keeps players on the pitch playing football and makes for a more enjoyable Saturday afternoon for everyone...

    Sin bins

Wrote that on the phone running out of battery, so a bit light on detail. He was cautioned for his reaction to me when I had to intervene to make them take the penalty. I'd still be there now if I had waited any longer. Captain had walked away - it was U16. Dissent caution was correct, only...

    Intimidation

As a fairly new ref I've made the point to senior peers that I've just not experienced players attempting to intimidate me. They stand up, look at me and sometimes step in towards me but always stop about three or four foot from me. I guess it helps I'm 6'3? Sorry if that doesn't help....

    Sin bins

I umpired hockey for ten years where you go green, yellow, red and any yellow was a sin bin. Started football this season and youth was no bins, adult was for C2. I love them, brilliant. I often step by giving (where relevant/possible) an IDK FK for dissent first. Get odd questions from...

Too old to take the referee course ???

It took a while to fit in the safeguarding course (why does a ref need a 3 hour safeguarding course, especially when he's done trustee and scouts safeguarding...). The ref course was good, but I felt like the only person with questions. The youf just sat there, but I wanted to know the why's and...

    Another handball question

I love my football, despite being an Ipswich fan, and played hockey more down to my schooling. The hockey rule book is superior to the football rule book (LOTG) in almost every way but the game of football is superior to hockey. Big rabbit hole, but two umpires not a ref and up to four...

Too old to take the referee course ???

I've just turned 45, did my course four months ago, 18 people only 3 over 18. Kids want to do it for pocket money - £20 for a game beats stacking shelves in Sainsbury's!?

    Another handball question

Thanks for the answers so far, it seems the adequacy of the rules for a grass roots context are the issue. When I did the ref training course a big deal was made of the removal of the "intention" element on certain offences. Referees are human and not blessed with mind reading abilities...

    Another handball question

Hi everyone (and a HNY!), I'm a new poster who has completed game 4 of his "appointed matches" refereeing "career" (but I've had 10 years umpiring hockey to about the equivalent of the Vanarama conference - a subject I'll post about at some point when I have the time). I gave a penalty a few...
