i think the tone of abuse has not got worse. Forensic dissection and accusations of bias and conspiracy have got worse. But I think refereeing analysis is promoted way more and way more positively on socials than ever - and reaches non referees. And all the ref social channels covering the WC...

I note that forensic re-rerefereeing and a far lower bar for physical offences in the modern game also have big impact here. Battle of Santiago in 62, even the Nuremburg Holland match from twenty years ago - of course players act different knowing there’s a red with a video;)
