    Goalkeeper Control 2025/26

I cannot find the passage about challenging the GK at all in the IFAB app or website in law 12 - hmm?

Man United Vs Leeds - Hair Pulling

In the context of prem this season I’m surprised. I am conscious that the LotG does not say we should find whatever excuses we can to avoid sanctioning players;) But easy red for me. Wasn’t there quite a widely reported incident in the womens game recently that might have affected this?

Martinelli incident - Southampton vs Arsenal FA Cup QF

Context. Every match and match situation is different. While stupid and disrespectful, this incident is trivial and surely the referee has been smart with the yellow here. At grassroots in a game getting out of hand, same action, maybe the smart move is a different colour card.

Martinelli incident - Southampton vs Arsenal FA Cup QF

OK there are two players down injured - right in front of the ball. The whole world can see it’s going to have to be on the whistle. The referee is acting according to common sense and protocol. The player is unfeasibly stupid. If you want a red, you can have it. But it’s so mild, I think...

Martinelli incident - Southampton vs Arsenal FA Cup QF

I have not seen it yet… If the referee is so close that he is interfering with the taking of the kick - at grassroots - to avoid all kinds of hell - this is usually a sign that the referee should manage the free kick ceremonially “on the whistle” (this is not in the laws but is best practice)...

    Doncaster v Mansfield - Offside

With an observer hat on, I would consider the ARs movement throughout the match. If there were repeated issues with crabbing vs sprinting, if there were other offside decisions made from sub-optimal positions, of course it’s going to be a prominent discussion and development point. But if it’s...

    Advantage

On one hand it’s your job to decide what constitutes advantage - and it’s also your job to adapt to match conditions. Sometimes you can feel what a team wants, sometimes it’s obvious from a team’s style, the score, match time etc. A team struggling that has finally got a first attack into the...

    Doncaster v Mansfield - Offside

At least we can try and learn something. This is always going to be tough as the players might be sprinting back from the other half at 70+% and the AR has some kind of standing start to deal with from the halfway line. In the pic, he’s gambled on going a bit early, and crabbing. At this level...

How lenient are you with OFFINABUS

On one hand context, target and personal tolerance are always different. On the other hand we must be able to identify and sanction pejorative language e.g. racist, homophobic, misogynist and “disablism” (not a term I use, but I understand it’s usefulness). And, I think we should all have a...

    Referee social media accounts.

In social media news I was a bit surprised that a dude showed at my match the other night and has started his own ref YouTube channel… no commentary, just very nicely edited and quite flattering footage of the third team prancing about!

    IFAB changes for 26-27

I also don’t like the Dogso change. It is asking players to cheat, foul etc. more. Not much more, but more. It wasn’t broken and didn’t need fixing.

Agreed. Same with Third Team for me. Kinda misreading the room IMHO.

    Referee social media accounts.

I think it’s pretty amazing how much ref content there is now on FB/Insta. Most of it is positive IMHO. I watch so much of it and know a few of the characters, I am amazed at some of the numbers. IFAB and a few other general channels (Referee Forum - boo!) get some random non refs, some vitriol...

How many matches have you refereed this season?

Our season starts in a few weeks. About 100 since start of last season. With about 1/3 of that futsal. I’ve done 7 pre-season matches and first proper match is weds night AR1 for one of my favourite young refs and it’s top level u18, which is nice.

SkySports reporting of the proposed new IFAB laws

I agree with what you say. But we have different experiences. I work on a national womens futsal league (in another country). Spectator numbers are small, televised audience is small (online). We have been briefed that the clubs want the referees to be proactive with the restarts to speed up the...

SkySports reporting of the proposed new IFAB laws

SkySports reporting of the proposed new IFAB laws

Sorry to mention futsal… the 5s works in futsal and the powers have had years to study it. In futsal the teams also understand it. At the highest levels they appreciate that the 4 second count is for the benefit of the paying punters. The count starts when the player is ready - but also if...
