    Celtic injury time penalty

This is the kind of line that Dermot Gallagher pedals that is actually complete nonsense. Handball interpretation in Scotland is far closer to England than Europe. Two or three seasons ago it was definitely a lot more strict/bonkers, but they’ve definitely toned it down and are generally a lot...

    U14's - SNAP HIM!!

The middle one would very much depend on tone and context of the game up to that point. The other two don’t insinuate violence at all for me so I’ve no issue with them. (And well done for the handling of the initial comment in the OP)

    New Ref - Scenario Advice

As long as you’re clear in your communication then I think it’s a fairly easy sell. First offence is obstructing the keeper, so that’s the restart regardless of what happens after that. As @Russell Jones says, a yellow for the attacker can help sell it. From personal experience last season I...

    CHE vs FUL

I think they were stuck between a rock and a hard place. Replace the VAR and it’s seen as an admission of error, but equally Michael Salisbury will have seen the fall out from the game and it would have undoubtedly been on his mind, even just subconsciously, if he was still involved in the game...

    Grimsby V Man United

Could the weather come into it a bit as well? The amount of rain that had fallen during the second half made it noticeably more difficult to make a controlled movement at times.

    FCSB v Aberdeen

Not sure it’s a handball or a caution for me. Even if you do deem it handball I’m still not sure what the caution would be for.

    Leeds v Everton

Tarkowski moves his body towards the ball because he is a defender who wants to block the shot. In doing so, his arm is by his side in a natural position. In my mind the “moving the hand towards the ball” justification is for situations like the Liverpool v Bournemouth game where the hand...

    Leeds v Everton

Real time I thought it was handball so I do have sympathy with the onfield officials. Not really sure what justification VAR has though as after only one replay it was clear it was a natural position.

    Women's football

I asked my sister about that because it had crossed my mind previously. She said it’s a natural instinct in the same way as putting your hands across your face if a ball is fired at it from close distance. So no handball is the sensible call IMO.

    England v Italy (Womens)

LotG define holding as “impacting the opponents movement” which this did. Nothing about the impact on play. I know where you’re coming from, but I think this is more England being out of line with everywhere else, in allowing rugby tackle-esque holding in the penalty area.

    Germany v Italy U21

I’m unsure on the first Italian red - he gives a second yellow for it but the TV replays aren’t very conclusive so I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt on that as he gets one look in real time. First yellow was a fairly standard caution so no complaints there. I was absolutely delighted to see...

    IFAB Law Changes for 2025/26

If the opposition are winning 1-0 though, then the goalkeeper is less likely to be wasting time surely and will want to be releasing the ball back into play quickly? And if they’re obstructed from doing that by an opponent then we give the foul, as we would currently.

Pre-season? I’m not finished the current season yet :)

    Corner warnings

I’ve never stopped a corner to give a warning. I’ll often give a verbal “I’m watching - nothing stupid” or something along those lines but if continues then I’ll give the free kick/penalty as appropriate. A lot of things annoy me in professional games, but top of my list of things that do my...

    Belgium v Wales

I’ve seen a couple of examples this season when an assistant has delayed flagging for a goal kick decision. Not sure I’ve seen one for a throw in though.

    Utd v villa

The officials should just blow (or flag) immediately if they thinks there’s an offence to stop any potential injuries from happening. Or is that not the case anymore? (I’m playing devils advocate a bit here. I don’t think this is a foul at all but it is interesting to see the pundits now wanting...

    Season review 24/25

I had my first 🟥 of the season last night. They obviously come along like buses though as after a violent conduct incident in the first half, a second player was dismissed in the second half for OFFINABUS. I had a poor spell of 3-4 games in February/March time, starting with a horrible game in...

Defensive free kick in penalty area

No but in reality it often will. If a team is going to lump it long anyway, what difference does it really make? I would also caveat that with saying don’t let them be ridiculous either. If the foul was clearly in the penalty area then I’m unlikely to let the free kick be taken even a couple of...

    Palace v Man City FAC

If you watch this video from approximately 24:40 the incident being discussed is a potential red card for SFP. No foul is given onfield and Willie Collum says this means the bar for intervention from the VAR is therefore much lower and an onfield review should be made. Whereas if a yellow card...

    Palace v Man City FAC

I agree but I think that’s a consideration that we all take into account, whether subconsciously or otherwise. For instance, my threshold for DOGSO at bottom division u13 is far higher than top division u18.
