    Taking a break

I took a 20 year break and it was only coming back to ref through my son that I realised how much I like it. Keep fit and active and keep up with the lotg. Sounds like you've swopped one type of pressure for another.

Nor v Man City - VAR?

It appears that some of these VAR decisions are clear and obvious when viewing multiple tv screens and angles. Yet the referee either isn't asked to or wants to look at a different angle to see a different story. Is this a re-refereeing the game issue? I feel the type of use of language here...

And to get the gormless one to kick the ball in the centre circle because he can't move before the whistle.

    Advice on Fouls

Definitely pays not to be on top of play. Just saw an earlier post re Manager's comments. My son's coach has been a bit 'shouty' at games and he said to me at the weekend that he'd decided to be more positive and quieter, as per FA RESPECT campaigns. He then said the ref on Saturday was same...

    Managers and Assistant offinabus

Zimmyman – First of all sorry to hear of your situation. I know what you mean with the faster game! I’m 52 and requalified last year having refereed many of my son’s u9, u10 and u11 games over the past 3 years. I mentioned to the FA that I was struggling with my knee (following the crab...

    Kicking ball at retreating player

Thanks for your comments and clarifications. To flesh out the incident more, the retreating player trotted in a straight line immediately when the whistle went. He was probably 3 yards away from the taker as he passed him. The taker had been floating the ball to the left all game but on this...

    Kicking ball at retreating player

Thanks Peter. I had Law 13 in mind and it was the action following the deliberate kick that I was considering. I'm pleased you've confirmed there's nothing explicit that covers this. Therefore, my thoughts would be that the ball was in play from the dfk, the ball was deliberately kicked at a...

Take 10 minutes... ok, make it 35

I think my local WFA stated the yellows all count in the totting up process. The difference is that a sin bin offender doesn't get fined by the FA. I like the fact that the yc means the offending team loses that player for 8-10 mins in the game in which the offence occurred. I hope this...

    Kicking ball at retreating player

In a step 4 game yesterday there was a dfk to reds in the centre circle. Striped player trotted from behind the red player to be 5 yards in front when red deliberately leathered the ball so hard at the back of the striped player that he fell over. The ref gave a retake. No words. Deliberately...

    Controversial goal

Sounds like you ignored the CAR. I think I'd be annoyed. Might be worthwhile just to go over and explain your decision briefly. I saw this done by a junior ref quite well yesterday. It sounds as if there's a potential card for the coach before the end of the game and a report afterwards. Did...

    Derby vs Cardiff

Exact opposite for me. He was tripped. DFK and therefore penalty.

    Bad day at the office!

I've found the sin bin to be really useful. Once used, other players then help you by telling their teammates to shut up.

    Lincoln v Wycombe

Isn't 1 concussion in 22 years reason to stop the game? Just in case. Do you really want to be saying to the parents, 'well it's only happened before once in 22 years and I thought he wasn't really injured at the time?'.

    Make a decision

The law appears ambiguous in this situation. However I feel it's natural justice that the non handball by the defender is where the attack phase stops. The handball can't be carried over. A new phase starts as the defender kicks the ball forward and the handball is irrelevant at that point...

    Lifting ball with both feet

Thanks. He deliberately trapped the ball and made 2 x 180 degree movements. I gave IFK but for the wrong reason.

    Lifting ball with both feet

Some advice please. A player who is on the ground near the corner flag, lifts the ball between his feet and swivels in his backside to move the ball 180 degrees. In the back of my mind I seem to remember that's obstruction but then you can lift the ball with both feet for a free kick. Looking...

    Friendly Grealishimulation

Look at this another way. The referee saw a dive. If he saw a handball or a trip, his reaction would be the same and it would be a quick check to see if there was an advantage to the non offending team. In this case there was clearly no advantage to the non offending team which is why he blew as...
