2022/23 Laws of the game - hard copy

I'd like to be counted in please. Thanks @Ross

“Mature ref” returning back to the whistle

My limited interactions with parents tend to keep a degree of humour... e.g they complain about a throw, "you didn't complain about the one the other way back there, did you?" I do think there's a degree of parents who just aquire verbal diarrhoea (like many "fans"), and pointing out the...

    Coin Toss - YOUTH Games

Taking my ref hat off and popping my coaches hat on... the GK for the U10 team I coach has drilled our captain into which end they want at home (ideally). When away, the team will often have a very quick chat about which end they'd prefer if given the choice. Teams will change if given the...

Missing which player committed the foul

Not sure it'd necessarily help in this scenario but could buy some thinking time by going to "chat" with the credible CAR? This obviously assumes how they've been all match and a few other assumptions about their personality... but a quick "I've got a foul by #5 and a YC", possibly adding "What...

    Yesterday

My knowledge of football really is limited... I could have sworn the other X matches that season counted!

    Junior/Youth One of those days!

Afternoon, as I've said on previous posts I qualified last August and at the moment cover youth football... looking to make the move to open age at somepoint soon but left today's fixtures with a definitive "why both" approach to that move! However, a number of the recent discussions on here...

    New Referee

I'm not going to regurgitate the above but will say please do share/reflect on how the match goes next week. But yeah... keep it simple and you can't go too far wrong at U11. Only thing I'd add is if the league is the same as my local youth league, it'll be their first year playing offside...

    footwear

Perhaps a quick message or email from you to both teams would be beneficial all round? "Hi guys, I've been informed the match between x and y is now on grass not astro. Can we ensure all players have appropriate boots for grass please?" (Up to you how specific you go with the "appropriate boots")

    Back to back games

If its one straight after the other you'll already be warmed up. But I still find it useful to "go through the motions" of my warm up. I find it helps me get into the right mindset. Also if there's anything 'important' or likely to play on your mind in the first game... I find writing a quick...

    Under 12 Red Card

For me (at U12 level) it'd be a stern warning to the coach and the player. But also informing the coach I'd be logging it as a respect case with the youth league to follow up. That kind of comment from an 11 year old sounds like a case of parroting a parent or coach.

    Brentford-Wolves and Frank send-off

Frank said that was what he said in his MOTD interview after the game. He also half held his hands up (my interpretation) and said he didn't necessarily agree with the cards but spends a lot of time lecturing players on not picking up silly cards/keeping emotions in check and he didn't do that...

    From high to low

I'm not going to repeat all the stuff that's been said already, merely my go to statements depending on age group. Youth football (probably up to U16) I'd be adopting my best "teacher voice" and stating the language is inappropriate and anymore may be dealt with. Yes it's inappropriate language...

    Forest vs Derby

I watched it, and as a forest fan also couldn't understand! It was all okay though because whilst shouting his mouth off Samba had his hands firmly behind his back... that makes it okay right?

    Forest vs Derby

What are people thinking on this one? Correct decision with the red? Rooney was critical of the ref post match, however I thought he had a great game. Kept a really tight leash on things in the first half... things got a little silly late in the second half after a penalty and handbags.

    False Name Given (WWYD)

Where I ref we are expected to take the name as well as the shirt number. Agree with most of the above, record the name and the false name (whichever way round) pass it all on to the powers that be. Side note... A friend of mine takes great pleasure in recounting the 'argument' he got into in...

Any tips for playing in bad conditions

Thanks both! That's in the ballpark of where I'd have drawn it but didn't know if there was anything else to bear in mind. Turned up to my match this morning... the home team had text me and assured me that the pitch was playable and definitely not frozen. They were correct, it wasn't...

Any tips for playing in bad conditions

Where I am it's been pretty foggy today... similar forecast tomorrow. At what point do you tend to deem a game unplayable/abandoned due to fog? I think it's more likely my games tomorrow fall foul of frozen pitches given it's forecast -1/-2 until about 6am, and not breaking 0 until 11am...

    Notts Forest Vs Arsenal

In comparison, TMOs on rugby union/premiership rugby sit in the OB truck covering the match normally parked outside the ground next to the bins. Therefore nice an easy to have on any TV fixture, or one with multiple camera coverage for highlights.

    U16s... thoughts?

Had an U16s match recently, pretty soggy conditions but certainly playable. Both coaches knew we'd start but if we got a heavy downpour or two we'd probably be calling it... the conditions held. Result! Decent match overall, I could have positioned better for a couple of close calls but nothing...

    RefSix Reliability?

I had a few minor issues today with rain causing my Garmin Vivoactive 4S to keep stopping play/start the stoppage time counter. Didn't make a significant difference as I had my second watch going.
