    Luton v Wimbledon

I haven’t seen this incident but (based on the explanatory video on the IFAB website) if the only reason it was going to a Wimbledon player was the deflection off the referee) then a drop ball to Luton remains correct. And the location of the DB should (I THINK 🤔) be where the ball hit the...

Fake hints and tips for new Referees.

Offside position should be judged when the ball lands at the attacker's feet, absolutely NOT when the ball is actually played :)

    LOTG 25/26 Briefing

I was asked by my local county league to do a short online session to introduce their referees to the incoming law changes. They chose to record the session so in case anyone's feeling bored or wishes to have a laugh at my delivery, there's 20 minutes worth at the below link. Be gentle with me...

    4-3W AR Appointments

I’d certainly suggest that the (minimum) five women’s lines should all be Adult and at the highest level you can sort. If this was then supplemented by lines on a credible U18 male league (sounds like you might be considering the Southern Counties Floodlit?) then I can’t see this causing an issue

    England v Italy (Womens)

There was clear guidance in England last year that totally unsporting, over the top holding (rugby tackling is a helpful shorthand!) should always be punished regardless of any impact.

    Germany v spain (womens)

You can rest assured, officials on professional games will (attempt to) enforce this regardless of the match situation. Not least because, initially at least, you can expect Observers to be all over this like a rash. The challenge will however be for this to become second nature for the...

    England v Italy (Womens)

Where games have VAR, the AR protocol for penalties has been changed. VAR monitors GK infringements and AR focuses on offside offences in any play that follows after the penalty

    England v Italy (Womens)

In many higher level games, AR2 times each and every (relevant) stoppage and feeds in this info over the comms to the fourth official. They then note this on the official match record (the ‘green card’) and will relay the proposed additional time to the referee a couple of minutes before the...

    Offside decision

Loads. Most typically at corners where there are defender(s) on the posts and the keeper comes to try and claim the ball

Email received from FA just now. They must have been monitoring Refchat ….

    keeper DOGSO today

The three criteria we have been asked to apply when deciding on DTR are Clear, Deliberate and Impactful. It sounds like this met the first two but not the third (because, as others have said, likely the referee has decided, correctly or incorrectly that it’s on his whistle).

    failed by a fraction!

An extra 0.5 will make a very material difference. It’s not designed to ‘cull’ more candidates but is a reflection of growing competition for places at Level 4 and a desire for those reaching that level to genuinely hit the ground running and ideally have the potential to progress to Level 3...

    failed by a fraction!

This season, I believe around 70 of the 240 who met ALL the criteria were not taken. And the “pass” mark has now been raised from 71 to 71.5 for the coming season. Whilst it is now somewhat easier than previously to get from 7 to 5, getting to 4 is becoming increasingly competitive and...

    Full-Time on Field Coach Dissent

One key thing to remember is that from an Observer point of view, it is likely the visual aspect that is all important. A manager could conceivably come up to you with a beaming smile, shake you warmly by the hand and then call you all sorts of unmentionable things … the Observer will be none...

    Minor Law changes Query

I agree. Whilst I think what they’ve said above is eminently pragmatic and sensible, it’s a crying shame it wasn’t included in Law from the get go, rather than them simply repeating the definition of GK control which can easily lead to a much harsher implementation.

    Minor Law changes Query

The below is from an IFAB Facebook post today. It sheds some light on their official guidance as to how to incorporate the actions of opponents into the mix and how / when the count should be started in that context. It is also in line with the practical implementation guidance given to PGMOL...

    Minor Law changes Query

As a (mildly) serious point, I do think that counting while changing position will end up looking less than great. We’ve seen two helpful recent changes to help refs be more athletic (single arm advantage and IFK signal now dropped earlier) … this law introduction will work in the opposite...

    DOGSO or no offence?

The decision as to whether or not to penalise the challenge is subjective. Initially the ball is won cleanly so we are then deciding if the secondary contact is worthy of a free kick .. I can see arguments both ways. However, if the foul is given, I’m comfortable with a YC sanction as I...

Throw ins- how far can the player get?

There are already large portions of the LOTG that are fundamentally different at the professional level … VAR has been the driver of that. I totally agree that the higher levels are role models and that some of the way they are asked to interpret the Laws makes life harder for lower levels. I...
