    Mindset / psychology advice

I CAR for my boy's team regularly and NEVER tell the ref in advance that I'm a referee too! I take my instructions and do as asked (with an occasional 'FFS ref' whispered under my breath!!!).

    Not really on TV but...

What a disgrace. Firstly from the players regardless of their age - I've watched/coached loads of U9s upwards and seen petulant stuff and occasional pushing and shoving but nothing like that. As for the parents, whilst I understand the natural instinct to protect your child, the less said...

    4th match. First 11 a side.

Well done. First few games are always a whirlwind and you feel like you’ve gone 10 rounds with someone. Three years in and I take little pleasure in YCs & RCs (with one or two exceptions). However we’re there to enforce the LOTG and protect the players/ensure a safe environment, and it gets...

    New 2 games in

100%. To this end, it's from U13s when I'm saying to captains at the toss "I might ask for your help managing your players if they're getting close to the line as it's better if you do than I have to". Very rarely is it an issue but I've certainly had times where this chat has led to U13...

    Pre-Match with Coaches

2017?! Our local Dog & Duck league still uses those pads! Now try and explain to anyone under 40 how we used to take debit/credit card payments. with a card imprinter...!!!

    New 2 games in

I'd echo what others have said. Sounds like you did the right thing for U11s with a warning for delaying the restart of play (kicking the ball away). My experience at U14s is that whilst there'll be some swearing, it's almost always frustration as opposed to being directed at you or other...

Chelsea vs West Ham - Inappropriate VAR Use?

    Agreed. I was amazed he wasn't YC'd.

Chelsea vs West Ham - Inappropriate VAR Use?

I'm a West Ham fan, but even I was surprised that Jarrod Bowen clearly told the referee to "f**k off" and faced no consequences. Didn't need to be a genius lip reader either. When stuff like that goes unpunished I don't care what anyone says it filters down and we have to pick up the pieces.

Delusional coaches killing the youth game

I referee in four different leagues (three youth, one OA) and not one requires any returns from refs. I know they're run by volunteers and sympathise with that as a volunteer for several clubs, but I think it would help paint a picture that WGS disciplinary reports might not.

Delusional coaches killing the youth game

I completely agree with you for the most part @Homer Ref although I'm in the same camp as @santa sangria in that in my experience over the last eight years or so (five strictly as a parent/coach/volunteer ref, three as parent and qualified referee) it is a small minority. It's impossible to...

    Appeals

Balancing access to justice with frivolity is a tough one, but there seems to be little evidence that there is abuse of the system at the moment. I'd be interested to know the appeal fees in the pro game as I imagine £50 for a Duck and Duck Sunday League team is enough to put off frivolous...

    Appeals

This does happen in other sports, though it will depend on whether an appeal is a review or a re-hearing. If the former (and I don't know but it feels these appeals are reviews rather than re-hearings, otherwise it wouldn't just be the suspension quashed) it is often dealt with by way of a...

    Offside, ref!

The “delay” tip is valuable for so many scenarios.

Pushed and sworn at by a player

Keep an eye on the Written Reasons section of the FA site. Had an aggravated OFFINABUS earlier this season, heard nothing as wasn't needed as a witness (charge uncontested) and took about three months for the reasons to be published.

    Appeals

No, he hasn't. That right to appeal is enshrined in the rules. Yes he did, but he's entitled to appeal the sanction and if an independent commission deems that decision to be incorrect or unable to be supported on further review on the balance of probabilities (the standard of proof appliable...

    Appeals

Very clear "no" for me. I work with athletes in a different sport and aside from the fact that removing the right of appeal for player related sanctions would not be Human Rights Act compliant given the potential loss of income/ability to earn a living, why would we want players in any sport...

    Watford v Lewes

That was first class viewing, and good to see female footballers can be d1ckheads too! On the basis the attacking player was comfortably getting the ball with the chance of a shot there and have a shot at an empty net it's DOGSO RC for me, albeit our angle is better.

Yes, my bad @Gabriel - she wasn't the one who committed the foul!

    Wolves vs Arsenal

I think the poll on here probably says it all. I can see why MO went red, and why some here agree - especially with the still image of the studs raking the calf. But, for me at least and in real time/full speed, I don't think there's enough force to warrant red, compounded by the fact that...
