Martinelli incident - Southampton vs Arsenal FA Cup QF

I don’t think it is that straightforward. Often when there is a push on a referee he won’t have a clue who did it. A few years ago I got pushed over, I was pretty annoyed at the time and suspected foul play but I had no idea what had happened. Seeing it back on video after I was in the way and...

    WHU v LEE

They are very rarely given once the shot has been got away unless SFP. Everyone in football says they want consistency, and they are certainly consistent with their approach to these types of incidents.

Martinelli incident - Southampton vs Arsenal FA Cup QF

I would guess because there is nothing in the laws that upgrades VC based on it being on a match official rather than a player? There is no way on earth this could be defined as VC if player on player contact, it would be a stretch for it even to be a caution. I'm not saying it shouldn't be a...

    Atletico v Barca VAR

Human nature, people always want what they think is better but when they get it they realise they were better off before. And in that sentence I think I have probably just explained VAR in itself.

Martinelli incident - Southampton vs Arsenal FA Cup QF

Whilst contact on a referee isn't acceptable, it still needs to be dealt with under the laws. Was this really a violent act by Martinelli, I would say not and Sam Barrott deal with it very well. VC is defined as using excessive force or brutality, and that definition even says against a match...

    Hated AR

The obvious one is put him as junior so he is away from the benches. If he is actually the most senior of the ARs he would have to replace you should you become incapacitated, but at least at that point it isn't really your problem to deal with.

    Doncaster v Mansfield - Offside

I think I know what the AR has done here, it looks like the attacker running the ball was going to pass it here, this is when the AR sets off. In his mind it will be clearly onside as the attackers are all well within their own half. Apologies for image quality but it blurs when paused...

    IFAB changes for 26-27

I suspect we will see some guidance come out regarding this, whether from IFAB or individual associations. Pretty sure it arises from problems that have arisen with religious items that could be classed as jewellery, whilst the FA put guidance out around it not all associations have and I...

    Doncaster v Mansfield - Offside

The video is here at 1:20, he has just stared moving too early. https://www.skysports.com/football/doncaster-rovers-vs-mansfield-town/534251

    Doncaster v Mansfield - Offside

Would really need to see it on video to see how the AR ended up there. Did he go too early, was he recovering from a previous position, or has he just switched off and drifted from the line (which all ARs sometimes do, even the very best).

    IFAB changes for 26-27

Same as many of the other changes they have made over the years, they have to justify their existence.

How many matches have you refereed this season?

Another disrupted season for me through a combination of injuries and work commitments. Although I've reached double figures (just), which is an improvement on the previous two seasons.

    USA v Belgium kit clash

It shouldn't happen, but it does. I was on a step 3 line and the team sheets said red and white stripes vs blue and white stripes so we didn't think anything of it. Then we left the changing room with the teams already lined up in the tunnel and all we could see was white, there was no red or...

    Arsenal vs Chelsea UWCL

I don't believe that for a minute, rather I think she realised the trouble she could be in so let go. I think the referee just missed that the hair had been pulled, but it is baffling how the other officials missed it. Can understand AR1 as she appeared to be looking away as she was running...

    IFAB changes for 26-27

I don't think the DOGSO change will make a huge amount of difference as how often is advantage currently played on a DOGSO challenge? Fairly rare I would guess.

    Ref across different FA/League

It is very common, especially in places like London where a referee registered in London could be refereeing games in Middlesex, Essex, Herts, Kent, Surrey or the non-geographical AFA. The only real rule is that you must register with the county that has control of the area you live, but even...

    Referee social media accounts.

I've put refereeing related things on my Facebook feed, like check ins at venues, plum appointments, but have always been very careful with both what I post and who can see the posts. I qualified and was in the NLS before social media really became a problem, certainly before referees were...

    USA v Belgium kit clash

Not at that level, it is sorted out well before anyone gets to the ground. If the authorities have OK'd the kits the match officials really aren't going to get involved especially, as others have said, the kits would have looked fine from the front. Even if the referee wanted a change there's...

    Germany v Ghana

Completely legal as he takes another two steps after stopping. It would only be an offence if he got right up to the ball and feigned there. There is an argument to say the law should be changed as doing this gives an advantage to the taker, but under the current law it is perfectly legal.

    England v Uruguay

Yeah, I couldn't see the issue here. I guess the focus was on the keeper not saving it, but there's a clear deflection off the defender.
