    Personal Hearing Advice

It's (fortunately) been quite a few years since I've had to attend a personal hearing, but I have one coming up later this week. For context, an U16 manager was dismissed for leaving the technical area to get involved with/argue with a player, which led to a mass confrontation between both sets...

    Controversial Decision

I'm not sure there's enough there for me to give a penalty. Looks like a case of both players having hands on/pulling each other, so I think I'd be waving play on there. Slight aside, are you reffing in tracksuit bottoms?

    Liverpool Vs Arsenal

I think you're getting too hung up on the concept that this was a deliberate action. You seem to have decided that Hatzidakis has deliberately and violently elbowed Robertson which in my view, and apparently in the view of the FA, is not the case. If you look at this as accidental, then an...

    Liverpool Vs Arsenal

The assistant referee was, in my opinion, shrugging him off rather than intending to elbow him, but if the FA/PGMOL determines that it was deliberate rather than accidental he deserves whatever punishment is deemed to be appropriate. What we can’t ignore is that, once again, we have a case of a...

    Correct Restart?

Without going into semantics too much, we're talking a matter of a couple of seconds from getting in each others' faces to the pushing, so I can't be definitive on whether it started before or after I stopped the game. What I don't think helps in this situation is a lack of guidance on what...

    MUN vs FUL

Can't remember the player, but wasn't there a similar incident involving Darren Drysdale (where he actually appeared to headbutt a player) reasonably recently? I don't recall him getting a particularly long ban.

    Correct Restart?

I think this is potentially one of the very few scenarios where the general ignorance of players to the LotG actually helps. Nobody questioned the restart, which certainly helped from a match control point of view. I‘m sure this won’t be the last time, so it’s a good one to learn from for me.

    Correct Restart?

Apologies, re-read and it’s not clear so now updated. It was two opposing players, so sounds like a defensive free kick would be the easier sell.

    Correct Restart?

Slightly odd one yesterday that I was hoping to get some clarity on. Feisty (and very enjoyable) top of the table U15 match yesterday. Ball played upfield and two players went into a 50:50 challenge, after which the ball broke free. As the ball rolled away, the two opposing players squared up...

    Got the ball

Not challenging at all as I know I use the ball gesture too, but what alternative would you suggest? Shouting “fair/clean challenge” or similar?

    City v Leipzig

Saw it described as a “UEFA handball“ and I think it’s the best description I’ve seen. Not surprised in the slightest that it was given, but I just don’t see it as a handball. Nobody appealed and nobody in the stadium expected it; came as a complete shock when the ref went to the monitor.

    Liverpool Vs Man Utd

Not often I disagree with you Rusty, but I think this is one scenario where the “at that level” argument doesn’t wash. No matter how minor the push, he’s placed his hand on and pushed an official, which should be a red at any level. This stuff does find its way down the chain, and there’s...

    Liverpool Vs Man Utd

Fernandes with a push on the linesman. He HAS to be sent off and it’s unforgivable to let that go!

    Not great first game imo

There's very few jobs/hobbies where you train and are immediately left to go it alone, but refereeing is one of them. The fact that you're here and already looking back at your performance to see where you can develop tells me that you'll be absolutely fine. Each referee will have their own...

    Junior/Youth Reporting Discriminatory Language

Thanks very much for the advice, all - reports are submitted, so it’s in the hands of the FA now. As a general rule I’m not bothered about sanctions and what players are given, but will I be entitled to know what ban the player who threatened me receives?

    Junior/Youth Reporting Discriminatory Language

Had a pretty horrible match this morning that included 3 OFFINABUS dismissals and ended with an abandonment after a player (who had been sin binned and subsequently dismissed) came running towards me screaming that he was going to knock me out. He was pulled away by teammates, but given the...

    SinBin Usage

I use them fairly regularly, but based on the genuine surpise from players/coaches when I do I can't say that the fact that they're not being used as much as they should be is a shock. I'd be intrigued to know why referees are favouring normal dissent cautions given that you have to explain why...

    ARS v CIT

Zero issue with the time wasting booking in principle, but you can’t just give it in 1 game. For years and years I’ve watched teams waste time at the Etihad from minute 1 and all that happens is a few token warnings followed by an 89th minute booking for the keeper. Same for the penalty. They...

    Man Utd V Man City

He’s running in line with the ball and is directly in between the ball and Akanji, so is effectively shielding it for Fernandes to run on to. There’s no way in my opinion that he isn’t interfering with Akanji.
