    First few open age games

I was in a similar boat to you not so long ago. I’m 18 now and have my first step 6 middle in a couple of weeks. One thing I do is at the coin toss, ask the captains their name and note it down on my hand. I ask them if I can call them by their names and I also say ‘my name is Dylan. Feel free...

    Where to find club marks

I don’t think you have access to them until you get to level 4. Some counties may tell you what your average is, but where I am they won’t tell us.

    Public Bollockings

I have been told by a level 3 to avoid saying things like ‘this is your last one or you’re booked’. It’s just incase you don’t follow through with that, it can make life difficult. Or the opposition may start screaming for a yellow card if he commits the smallest infringement. It really...

    Observer attire

I am observing my first game tomorrow and was wondering what attire is best ? I’ve seen some observers dressed in sports tracksuits and some dressed in what you may consider smart casual. Odd question I know, but I don’t want to be incorrectly dressed ! 😂

    Far too many L4/5s

I’m in Sussex. We seem to have a similar problem to some extent. However, we have too little level 5’s who have passed the fitness test. It’s interesting you say that step 7 is refereed by level 5-4 candidates ? As a level 6, we can referee step 7 down here. I’m currently waiting (and hoping)...

    Penalty shootouts

Thank you. That is indeed what I meant with how to know when it’s ended. I always find sudden death is especially where I have gone ‘blank’ with it. I guess it’s something I’ll learn over time.

    Penalty shootouts

I seem to have had some….odd.. moments in penalty shootouts this season. I was in the middle for a county level u23 game (league cup) a few months ago and penalties were taken and I blew to end the shootout early (realising very quickly I had made a mistake and we still needed a penalty to be...

    Another buzzer flag thread...

I find them good. I have used them (obviously) when in the middle with the receiver unit and I’ve also used them when on the line with the actual flags and I think they’re good. Touchlines are the best in my opinion but the RefStop ones are good quality and they’re a bit cheaper. I feel they’re...

    Another buzzer flag thread...

I agree on the whole. I do a lot of games without the buzzers and then only use them when I have netural AR’s and I feel that they do help. I have noticed that when I have the buzzers, I still look across at my AR’s and I haven’t fallen out of those habits and I’ll make sure I don’t !

    Another buzzer flag thread...

I have some RefStop ones which my parents brought me as an 18th birthday present. I’ve used them quite a few times and they’re efficient and do the job very well. I would recommend them.

    What do you write?

I put my notebook in my back pocket. My notebook inside (if I have team sheets) I use the ref stop ones and put it inside. I fill out the first 11 and subs with first and second names for both teams and I write the captain’s name for each team at the top. I just use a tally for goals (alongside...

Chelsea Vs Newcastle - EFL Cup

Disappointing not to give Callum Wilson a yellow card for saying ‘f*ck off’ and then ‘ f*ck off man’ to Jarred Gillet.

    Sibling officials

I’m sure I read somewhere that Michael Salisbury and Graham (?) Salisbury did a game together in the Championship (?). I think it was Graham Sailsbury’s last game and Michael was 4th official. I may be wrong, but I seem to remember seeing that somewhere. That is Father-Son rather than brothers...

    Clampdown?

I thought it was for everyone. (Expect some things like the 30 seconds thing) I thought dissent, kicking the ball away, etc were being clamped down on

    Clampdown?

In my opinion it was. The home team were loosing by one goal and chasing the game. It just felt like it should have been a yellow.

    2 minutes silence

One of the adult Sunday leagues in our area made it absolutely clear it was mandatory that you CANNOT play between 10:59 and 11:02 am. The games kicked off at 10:30am.

    Clampdown?

I was watching an isthmian game earlier and there was an offside which was given and that player passed it and then the other player shot over the bar. No caution and not even a word. Are we still clamping down on kicking the ball away, etc ?

    Sin Bin yellow cards

I never knew that- Thank you. There are a couple of teams in the league which their first teams play in the national league south, so that could be why ?

    Sin Bin yellow cards

Do you know what category isthmian u18 is ? As these don’t use sin bins. However, the isthmian u23 did (I believe the u23 league has now folded)
