    DOGSO advantage

Hi all My game today. Striker goes through with one defender, keeper cones running out .. defender trips attacked outside the penalty box but attacker stays on feet and gets shot away (probably not as good as he would have had he not been tripped) I give free kick and went yellow after lots...

    What flag signal to make.

What about an outstretched left hand towards the centre circle and a run up the line towards it? Albeit this is not what the guidance says ..

    Deliberate play for offside

So essentially.. a bit like a deliberate backpass to the goalkeeper - it has to be 100% deliberate .. therefore, in a practical sense, go on the side of caution and in favour of the defending team when thinking about making these calls.

    Deliberate play for offside

What if ball is travelling in air for 30/40 yards / goes up for header and ends up flicking it on when he meant to clear it but could only get a bit on it. Or if he was challenged by an opponent that was onside.. would that be classed as not a deliberate act as he was under pressure?

    Deliberate play for offside

Ball played into penalty area from a free kick about 40 yards out. Player in offside position. Defender jumps and goes to head it clear but mistimed it and it glances off and goes to attacker who scores. Given offside. Correct? I can find the bit in the law which says it but can’t quite...

What to write for first game

Some leagues will ask for score to be recorded and submitted even though they are not published or shared. I would keep a score as a good habit anyway. Other than that any names of players that receive a card or misconduct (very rare). Enjoy!

    No DOGSO yellow card

Yes - so I think his point was on his head it was DOGSO therefore red if I thought he didn’t make a genuine attempt for ball or yellow if o thought he did. My point is I didn’t think it was DOGSO or reckless therefore no card

    No DOGSO yellow card

So if there was no attempt to play the ball but it wasn’t considered DOGSO that’s not a mandatory caution?

    No DOGSO yellow card

Hi all Observed today. Red team player gets to goal line and cuts along into area. Skips past blue player and player sticks a leg out to bring him down. Penalty no arguments. Ball runs through to keeper. I thought no DOGSO because, chance of player not reaching ball before the goalkeeper got...

    Rice red card

I do agree. Silly actions from Rice an experienced premier league player. it is petulance. The kick is the thing that makes this a difficult decision for the average fan to accept (rightly or wrongly). In their eyes, Rice has been booted in the shin and has been sent off, no narrative is going...

    Rice red card

I find myself explaining this easier that this is not delaying the restart hardly at all if any than it is delaying the restart so is a card. Especially with the kick after. Talking to both players and get on with it. That said, Rice on a yellow card, silly thing to do.

    A very strange decision

People will obviously know better than me.. but if I was the referee in that position.. part of my brief to my assistants would be in a situation like this.. get in my ear and don’t let me restart until we have got it right. Despite that fact he has VAR - I am surprised that no one has said this...

    Junior/Youth First match next week!

Times have changed. I’m a teacher. Adults (and therefore) children’s behaviour has worsened considerably.

    Premier League Matchweek 1 discussion

Reports that the Brighton incident was overturned without the referee seeing the replay as the screen wasn’t working. Does anyone know what happened here? Correct decision in the end.

    Kit clash

Correct. I wouldn’t say doesn’t matter though. The word ‘distinguishable’ is also used in the outfield players colours so if your are referring to one then you will need to refer to the other. If both are different shades of green and are fine then so would different shades of orange / red.

    Kit clash

Even the goalkeepers are both wearing a shade of green!

    Junior/Youth First match next week!

Know your line (comes with more experience). Don’t be afraid to slow the game down to lay down your expectations. Call a player over be firm but fair. Tell them that is not how you speak to me on this pitch. Don’t panic if you think you have made a mistake just take each decision on its own...
