    Newcastle v Manchester City

If it can show a player jumping when he isn't, why should anyone trust it?

    Newcastle v Manchester City

I'd made a promise to myself not to start a thread about City games but - even after my wife said "The referee's decision is always right", which didn't help - this has to raise questions about the semi-automated offsides. Exhibit 1. From Futoffsides Exhibit 2. The cartoon drawn by SAOT...

    Offside question

".......give an explanation as to why ..." sounds like the players might have known what the correct decision should have been. No great matter so long as you didn't caution for dissent the attacking player if he complained about it! He won't be writing to PGMOL for an explanation.

    City vs Liverpool

Is there a general flaw in the law? Was "only penalised on becoming involved in active play" intended strictly to mean that "interfering with an opponent" could only be applied after the ball has been played? What if any of the "interfering" criteria was happening immediately prior to the ball...

    City vs Liverpool

It looks like the only information that the AR gave was that a player was in an offside position and possibly interfering with an opponent.

On another topic, when a penalty is awarded after a VAR review, why does half the defending team need to go into the penalty area surrounding the taker?

Changed drop ball law … devil in the detail

But that's what I mean. To get in a position near to play on the right, you're nowhere near the lazy S line, which is further left than the strict diagonal. And if you've gone over to the right to be closer to play, if the attacker swings in a cross from the right you're not near where it's...

Changed drop ball law … devil in the detail

Given the way the book has grown over the years, it's way past time they changed the "Positioning, Movement and Teamwork" pages. For a start, what is a "lead AR"? And if, with no obvious authority, a "wide diagonal" is no longer being taught, why is it still in there? As for the "lazy S", what...

Changed drop ball law … devil in the detail

Transition is used now to mean what happens when a defending team gets possession. And if the ref is ahead of the attack, it can be a long way to catch up with play going in the other direction.

Changed drop ball law … devil in the detail

I know that's just a diagram but it illustrates the problem. You're blocking the pass.

Changed drop ball law … devil in the detail

And how does the defender get past you to intercept a pass? Something like the below was always my understanding.

Changed drop ball law … devil in the detail

I'd be happier if the FA/PGMOL just said "don't get stuck between attackers and the PA"

    Handling after deflection

I've lost track a bit of any guidance about handball based on body shape / position of arms when the ball deflects off a player's or opponent's body. Is there any official guidance beyond what's in law 12? (And when did it last change?)

Changed drop ball law … devil in the detail

No more where? General positioning and movement Recommendations: • The play should be between the referee and the lead AR • The lead AR should be in the referee’s field of vision so the referee should usually use a wide diagonal system • Staying towards the outside of the play makes it easier...

Changed drop ball law … devil in the detail

Ha ha - who said football was a simple game? As an aside, have EPL refs been given instructions not to act as an extra defender? (When the diagonal put them on the left of attacking play.) It seems this season to be less of a problem with attackers having to avoid the ref.

    Brentford v Manchester City

Since allowing defenders to play the ball in the PA at a GK, a lot of kicks are taken in the middle of the GA with defenders either side!

    Fair challenge?

Pen - just not looking at the ball.

    Brentford v Manchester City

I can see that, but it can still lead to charges of inconsistency - and possibly in that match led to another YC that was simply wrong in law. I've copied and pasted this from ratetheref (presumably from a City fan): Nunes (City) was shown a yellow car for not retreating for a free kick when...
