I saw this video and wouldn’t mind a clarification

At the risk of stating the obvious, It’s correct in law because the foul by the goalkeeper denied the attacker an obvious goal scoring opportunity! The four considerations are simply that .. things that need to be considered to help decide if an OGSO was denied. In this case, Distance and...

    U14's - SNAP HIM!!

🙉 . They are your games to officiate and entirely your choice how you choose to deal with any provocative, unsporting and unnecessarily aggressive comments. Hopefully, based on the input from EVERY other poster on here, you get the point that, if you ignore such comments, you will be making life...

    Brentford vs Chelsea

It’s certainly a very marginal decision. You can see the active AR hold his position post goal which suggests he communicated the offside position to the referee. I’m somewhat surprised that, given it’s a subjective decision, VAR didn’t choose to send the referee to the screen to assess.

    U14's - SNAP HIM!!

I’d be wary of using Refchat referees as a representative sample of the the officiating population. In reality, I believe that the majority of U14 referees would completely ignore this comment … wrongly in my opinion. @HonestRef , I understand that the decision might, in the above context, be...

    Penalty advantage

This advice is relatively common, both at higher and lower levels. I find myself violently disagreeing with it on a matter of basic refereeing principle! Outside of keeping players safe, keeping the game fair is job number 1 for officials. I really struggle to see how giving an attacking team...

    Serbia vs England

Or … the ball was moving just wide of the penalty area and it was a slightly heavy touch 😀. In reality, stills are most useful only for evaluating the Distance and Defenders considerations. For Direction and Control, a moving picture is needed. Based on the discussion, would you now at least...

    U14's - SNAP HIM!!

For me, all three of those phrases fall just the acceptable side of the line. None of them clearly advocate anything worse than a Careless Foul

    Serbia vs England

I don’t feel that still image is helpful. Were it not for the foul, my view is that Kane would have actually got to the ball about 5m prior to that position and the defenders would not have been in a position to stop him getting a shot away from just inside the area. Overall, whilst it’s far...

    Serbia vs England

100% agree. Kane would have got to the ball just outside the penalty area and would have been able to get a shot away unimpeded. The angle wouldn’t have been ideal but for a quality international player that’s most definitely an OGSO.

    Time wasting at throw in

As Rusty says. I’d suggest initially using your voice (loudly) to want them to get going, then add in an (obviously irritated) whistle. If they don’t heed the warnings then it becomes an easily sellable caution.

Referee’s Procedure in Case of a Mutual Altercation Between Players During the Match"

That makes sense, thank you. And actually, going back to your Post 4 provides another helpful way of often justifying a DB restart .. you simply say that the cautionable offences took place after you had decided to stop play .. which may or may not be slightly before you actually blew the...

Referee’s Procedure in Case of a Mutual Altercation Between Players During the Match"

So, based on what you have actually observed, the correct outcome in law is a penalty. But you knowingly choose a defensive free kick instead. In part, because of ‘what everyone is saying’! Really?! More constructively, I don’t think this is an easy situation with a straightforward solution...

Referee’s Procedure in Case of a Mutual Altercation Between Players During the Match"

That’s a very fair challenge and it certainly got me thinking! I’m not sure I can strictly justify my approach in a pure Laws way 😊. Although, interestingly, I’m also aiming to get to the ‘what will help you manage the situation best’ outcome. Because a strict law interpretation could be...

    Penalty advantage

And the reason it’s a more difficult sell is because the alternative to the PK needs to be not just comparable but actually better 😊

Referee’s Procedure in Case of a Mutual Altercation Between Players During the Match"

More than just allowed, if the altercation is serious, then it's absolutely recommended! If you (or your team) the witness the first offence, then restarting with a FK to the opposition is correct. If, on the other hand, you only see the altercation already underway, then cautioning both...

    New Ref - Scenario Advice

Whilst it’s not (yet) a mandatory caution, you might also wish to consider a yellow card for the striker to better ‘sell’ the overall outcome.

    AR yesterday

It does get very tricky in these situations! Worth getting in the habit of repeated quick 'head flicks' from facing forward to the left hand side and back again. Best way to stay (relatively) on top of both key priorities.

When does an injured player have to leave the field?

If no treatment actually occurs and the physio does not enter, then officially the player can remain on the FOP. However, my personal coaching to new and developing refs is that, if the injury appears so serious that you have to stop the game with the ball in play, then I'm a fan of simply...

    IFAB Q and A

I totally agree. I remained a little unsure even after seeing this presentation, even though the arrow is clearly pointing far more closely to the referee’s position than to the ball position when he blew his whistle. However I then got it clarified through PGMO and it also featured as one of...

    IFAB Q and A

https://www.theifab.com/law-changes/latest/ In the presentation at the top of the page. It’s the video of Yellows v Whites where the referee gets hit by the ball. Given our numerous discussions about how poorly IFAB generally phrase / clarify things, I find it’s always worth digging into...
