    Wolves v Arsenal

If we’re saying Luiz shouldn’t have seen red because he didn’t mean it it makes no sense to show a yellow - after all he didn’t mean it.

    Wolves v Arsenal

Look at the first Southampton red card. I have no doubt in my mind that the player hasn’t meant that at all - it’s still text book SFP. Not sure about accidental VC though.

    Wolves v Arsenal

Common sense is irrelevant when the law gives no room for manoeuvre. You’re looking at it the wrong way round: it’s not ‘yellow unless it’s a pull/rugby tackle etc.’ it’s ‘red unless a genuine attempt.’ I’m struggling to see what the confusion is here.

    Wolves v Arsenal

It doesn't matter what feels right. It feels harsh but the laws are simple: DOGSO is a red unless it's a genuine attempt. Is it? No. Red.

    Peter Bankes

Do you genuinely believe that Peter Bankes is a better referee than Martin Atkinson right now?

    Peter Bankes

Coote is consistently poor as a referee and VAR and appears very arrogant. The other two have been on the SG1 list for less than two seasons and are on the FIFA list by virtue of England never filling their quota for referees on the list in recent years. Would you appoint either of them to a...

Offside - PGMOL clarification (in discussion with ifab)

Truth be told I don’t care if they write a 500000 page document which outlines every possible outcome. I’m paid to read it. I also don’t dare if it’s 4 pages and 3 billet points each. But the half way house of being explicit for some and expecting Spirit for the rest is naff.

Only if I can throw in ‘the forum collectively is undecided on VAR.’

Added time when there is an ongoing injury

I was always told - right or wrong its never harmed me - that if your watch stops/you forget to turn it on etc you should always say +3. +3 is your standard, if you think back ahd it’s been much longer go +5 or +1 if it feels right. It’s the last resort but on the rare occasion it’s never...

Added time when there is an ongoing injury

I genuinely couldn’t tell you when I last stopped a watch. If it’s obvious time wasting or an injury I’ll look at the watch and think ‘we stopped at 76 and it’s now 79’ - I’ll play 3. I usually pass this to my 4O too so if he puts up 5 he can say ‘your lad was down for 3 on 76 and then there...

Offside - PGMOL clarification (in discussion with ifab)

This is a wider issue and something I’ve been pondering for a while. This law is, like my recent thread on ‘what is a wall?’ prompts a lot of law vs spirit discussion and a fair amount of ‘what’s the law there for?’ Is that really a sensible way to govern the planet’s most popular sport? If...

    What is a wall?

That's why I made this thread. its a well-meaning law full of holes and technicalities.

    Sheffield Utd v Plymouth

This is tough for me as someone who defends referees and VAR more than anyone! Whatever you think of the handball law - that's an offence.

To answer the original tweeter, which of the decisions was clearly and obviously wrong?

    Kettering vs Leamington

It is possible to think it’s a red card while also ‘what could he have done differently?’

    Kettering vs Leamington

The fact that we as referees can’t interpret the referee’s body language here is worrying. Don’t get me wrong - any contact with aggressive intent is a red for me. But I think the referee has at least two learning points - the hand signals and the fact he’s moving towards the player. Frankly, if...

    What is a wall?

With respect, I don’t think you’ve answered my question. The quote from LOTG offers no definition of wall - in fact, it even puts the term in quotation marks in a ‘oh, it’s a slang term but we all understand it’ way. And your point about gaps is a huge leap. Does each member of the wall...

    Luiz headbutting Jiminez

Because no part of your body should be up there? If your fist is up there it’s a red, because you can’t play the ball like that. From memory both players are entitled to go for it. I'm not sure I can get on board with the idea of showing cards based on the level of injury.
