    ENG v MALTA

It’s a subjective call surely. Obviously he’s in an offside position but whether he’s interfered at all with play is doubtful.

    ENG v MALTA

The Rashford one is probably less of a penalty than the Kane one. They’re battling for the ball and ultimately Rashford pulls down the defender.

    ENG v MALTA

Having now seen the replay I can now see why it hasn’t been given, but I still don’t think it’s a dive. Still looks like a penalty would be a decent decision but probably not a C&O error for VAR.

    A bit of fun

I got 8 too and had some where I changed the answer last second.

    ENG v MALTA

Commentators just confirmed that VAR is used. There’s not any scenario in which that isn’t a penalty - let alone being a dive.

    Can anyone expand on this?

It’s one thing to get worked up at a referee at a game - often still unacceptable but in the moment it can be understood that sometimes people get overwhelmed with emotion and frustration, and then unfortunately take that out on referees. To then take to social media and criticise any referee...

    Can anyone expand on this?

The bad thing is that we’ve all met at least one of these coaches recently who seem to think that they’re in the Premier League. I do however think he makes some good points though in the replies that the FA should make support more clear for new referees and the course should be more extensive.

    Can anyone expand on this?

Just saw this Tweet and wondered if anyone knew what had happened here. By the sounds of it yet another example of attitudes about professional referees being applied to grassroots refs, and young, new ones at that. https://x.com/themikesfc/status/1724150664635228303?s=46&t=GfQ8Fi_YHXFpmfA2kWAe9A

    Colin's got the answers!!

I’ve just read all his five points and they are absolutely ludicrous: https://x.com/warnockofficial/status/1724763515532038243?s=46&t=GfQ8Fi_YHXFpmfA2kWAe9A It shows a complete lack of understanding of how refereeing and VAR works and would lead to so many issues.

    Colin's got the answers!!

Unless those players were also trained and experienced referees they’d do an even worse job as the VARs.

Northumberland Football League - statement about continuing misconduct

It sounds practical but it does nothing to challenge poor behaviour. I suppose it depends what the league prioritises. I can see the logic behind it and I can see why neutral ARs would help control a game, but I can imagine nobody ever gets questioned about the way they act.

    The one that got away.

Funnily enough a couple of years ago I had an U13 County Cup game in which one team clearly hadn’t warmed up enough and had an injury every few minutes. In the same game one keeper got a lengthy injury after a challenge, and an SFP challenge put a defender on the floor for about ten minutes. I...

I dont like 80% of PL Referees

Imagine if someone like Anthony Taylor said that they didn’t like 80% of Premier League managers. There’d be uproar.

    Chelsea v Man City

The number of checks and how they are spent would be something that someone with access to much more data about VAR and how it works would be in a better position to decide. 3 was purely an example which could or could not work. It might be the case that one is enough, with that one challenge...

    Chelsea v Man City

I think there’s about a million ways a challenge system could be implemented, all of which have their pros and cons. If you were to give the responsibility for a review directly to the teams it would prevent confusion but teams would complain if they ran out of reviews and then a shocking...

    Chelsea v Man City

I think it would be interesting to try. Maybe a hybrid system would be better - VAR can intervene if needed but if they decide not to a team can then challenge, forcing the referee to go to the monitor?

    Chelsea v Man City

I’m no VAR expert (although everyone seems to be nowadays), but I sometimes feel like a better solution would be to give the VAR the option to send the referee to the screen purely if they disagree with the decision. Currently we’re asking VARs to make two judgements, first whether they agree...

    Chelsea v Man City

I am 99% convinced that the whole clear & obvious stuff is the reason why a large proportion of VAR decisions are causing controversy. Just send Anthony Taylor to the screen and let him make the call.

What in the hell is this?

Was going to make a post about similar (though less severe) concerns that I’ve been developing over the past few months. As a season ticket holder at an EFL club I’ve noticed an increase in the abuse EFL officials are receiving from fans and it’s becoming beyond ridiculous. It’s always been...

"PL managers want VARs to be assigned to refereeing teams"

Mike Dean made a good point on Sky Sports a few weeks ago that if England was to stop using VAR and other countries kept using it, English football would be left behind. It’s less likely that English refs would be appointed to big European games and teams playing in Europe wouldn’t be prepared...
