    First match - General advice

I think once they start playing 11v11 at U13 things become more serious. Once they’re comfortable playing full side games, I find that cards seem to swiftly follow. Teenage boys, particularly around 13-15 seem to be much more aggressive than anyone else and have an unfathomable urge to fight...

    New card wallet set recommendations

Do you mind me asking what you do use? I’m getting a bit frustrated using a notebook as it’s so time consuming.

    Refereeing Decisions Explained

And I think this is a bigger part of the problem than people seem to realise. The operation of and training for VAR seems overly complicated. The way “clear and obvious error” is judged provides more room for human error as the VAR is essentially making two judgements, both whether they agree...

    Sin Bin Extremes

This is exactly what I think. Time spent in the sin bin should be an additional punishment on top of a standard caution, not a replacement all together. It makes a game much more difficult when players and coaches have no idea what is going on. Showing two yellow cards to the same player, but...

    Arsenal Vs Man Utd

It’s about time that more managers actually took responsibility for their teams mistakes rather than blaming the referee so much. It isn’t Anthony Taylor’s fault that his defenders let two goals in in added time.

    U18 drinks break

Did the exact same thing in my game today in each half, U16 league game. Definitely helps out. Players were getting visibly tired and my dry throat was making me lose my voice.

Thanks all for replying. Just to clarify I’m in England.

    Sin Bin Extremes

I’m quite comfortable with using sinbins and with how they work. However even after a few years I do still have a few questions that I hoped someone might be able to weigh in on. They are all hypothetical and have never happened to me, but are possibilities: 1. What happens if one team has so...

    Red card or not

I tend to agree that they mean the general area of play. Say for instance there was a fight in the TA after the full time whistle, I don’t think any referee would hesitate to show appropriate cards, even though it is technically off the pitch.

FA Cup - MNC vs MNU

I’ve been tempted to write to the broadcasting channels about this problem for ages but don’t see what difference it would make. Maybe this year I’ll make a note of everything I hear on TV that is factually incorrect, and make a tally of how many times I hear it repeated back to me as the...

FA Cup - MNC vs MNU

I’ve just been thinking about this, and realised that no matter how it’s worded it’s going to be confusing. There’s always going to be an element of personal judgement unless you just go with “its handball every time it hits the hand”, which is even more unfair.

FA Cup - MNC vs MNU

I actually don’t know which channel to watch. I’d like to see Jermaine Jenas trying to referee this game. Lee Dixon and Ally McCoist just as bad on the other side.

FA Cup - MNC vs MNU

To be honest I think the penalty is a relatively straightforward decision, particularly when it goes to VAR. Yes, maybe the game doesn’t expect it, but letter of the law it is absolutely a penalty. Argument seems to be its a natural position because he’s jumping, but let’s be real, there’s no...

WSL- Everton vs Arsenal; Red Card

Same for me. I think at a grassroots level you could very easily caution and nobody would really argue, but by letter of the law it is probably a red and this level would expect that.

Brilliant… honestly it was one of those decisions you feel really confident in making and your post on here really helped with that.

    DOGSO/SPA clinic notes

Just wanted to say this thread was really useful. Came in handy tonight on a controversial but 100% DOGSO call I made, so thank you.

youth manager "i've never heard of sin bins".

I would argue that that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Obviously cards are and should always be able to be used at any age and any level, but I personally think U12 and below is more about educating players on the game. This might come in the form of more explaining, even after the whistle has...

BBC News article on Ref abuse

Nothing is gonna change until it all changes at the top. Grassroots players and spectators mirror what they see in the EPL and EFL. The broadcasters don’t help by usually having a one-sided panel of ex-players who don’t know the current LotG.

Throw ins - just a couple of things

I think all this has proven is that IFAB have written a law which is convoluted and far removed from what regular players expect.

    Bolton vs Forest Green

Was at this game as a Bolton fan. Honestly, great call by the linesman to spot the foul… but the aftermath was an absolute shambles. I don’t think the referee had even spotted the punch, so this one is pretty much all on the linesman. In terms of the actual game, it all went downhill from...
