    Bobby Madden article

    Every comment section and pundit-cast is already full of cries of 'accountability' (to whom?) and 'corruption'. If you suggested moving the marks away from clubs, there'd be uproar. 'Marking their own homework,' and so on.

    Game abandoned

    They'll understand when they can't play any more games until the fine is paid, though I suppose if it's a U18 team they're about to age up into senior football anyway.

    Hand Ball Leading to Goal

    Monday I had a game in which a blue defender made an accidental handball after a shot, which did not significantly change the flight of the ball and a goal was scored. One player grumbled about the handball but seemed happy to keep the goal. In terms of match control, I'd always lean towards...

    Post-match safety (a brainstorming session)

    Seems like a reasonable response! One of the tips I've picked up - wait until everyone has cleared the field, make sure you're the last ones off - go off as a team if there's lots of you, but make sure there's some space between you and the rest of the crowd as they pace off.

    Game abandoned

    Surely your local FA is going to hit them with a fine for causing the game to be abandoned/failure to control the players? 4 abandonments in a season is extraordinary.

    Goal scored directly from deflection off referee?

    Nearly fifty years ago, and absolutely nothing has changed except the hairstyles, and the pitches are (slightly) better!

    Strange Match

    Well, another game today, this time on a saturday league at a decent level. The play was certainly better, and notably I wasn't as firm on the dissent - it was lower level, constantly-running comments rather than a big dramatic shout as in the game above. It definitely distracted me at times...

    Goal scored directly from deflection off referee?

    There's an old ITV short film ("Sunday Again and Sweet FA") which follows a sunday league team, a put-upon referee with a philosophical approach, and the various hangers-on we see around the matches - and the end is very similar to what we saw in this clip, which I think was from three years ago?

    Strange Match

    I was too square-on to be 100% certain if it was a pull or a careless tackle, so at the time I briefly thought about it and decided just to give the foul - there was certainly no DOGSO case given the direction of travel, and initially both teams were a bit bemused. I later on caught the home...

    Absolutely disgusting

    Hope he's alright - I've read elsewhere that his jaw was broken. I think once they've started, there's not a lot the assistants can do, apart from perhaps blocking once the assailant's gone off on his own again. They're probably trying to get a decent view for when the report has to go in.

    Strange Match

    Hi all, Just done a quarter-final playoff between two outmatched teams. First ten minutes, there's a player running toward the byeline when there's a pull that brings him down, penalty, expecting some lip which is fine. Home team pulls away and are clearly better, with two incidents of dissent...

    Players Saying No Foul/Wrong Decision

    If you get the sense that it's happening a lot, wait for the next decision they disagree with. Blow your whistle, invite the offender and their captain over. Politely explain that the next time they offer their feedback they'll get to enjoy a ten-minute rest. Then follow through with it. This...

    Well done! Enjoy the occasion!

    Semi-Final Appointment

    So, somehow I've got myself into some real trouble with the league now! I've been appointed to referee a league cup semi-final under floodlights next week, and while I'm obviously pleased that someone thinks I've done well enough to get the appointment, I am already nervous. I know nothing about...

    Relaxing After a Sunday

    How do you get rid of the lingering grumbles after your sunday morning games? It seems like no matter what my performance, the losing team is always convinced it's my fault, and recently it's been getting to me for the rest of the weekend. What do you do to discharge the stress after your games?

    Sending off situations: How common are they?

    I've given five this season, including a few double-yellows, most of which were for a single team who are known for awful discipline. Ultimately, we're all out there to enjoy a good game of footy, and the red card is the last resort tool we have to make sure that's possible. If the game needs...

    From the Egg-Chasers

    I wonder if those watching England vs Ireland yesterday have seen this from Matt Dawson - from my limited knowledge on rugger as a player, it seemed a fairly clear red, and Dawson himself says "by the letter of the law, it was right." https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/rugby-union/65006193 More of...

    Mass Con -> Mass Brawl

    Dead easy - the local moneybags team visited and despatched them 0-5. I did pick up this fantastic line from the home manager towards the referee at half-time though, after he was complaining about his player recieving a sin bin but not the away side: "Why didn't you sin bin [them]?" "Because...

    Mass Con -> Mass Brawl

    Would you believe it, I'm on the line for one of the teams involved again tomorrow. Fifty pence says their team will look a little bit different this week!

    Mass Con -> Mass Brawl

    I imagine this would probably lead to a 'failing to control players' charge for both clubs, but does anyone know what sanctions, if any, are involved in allowing members of the public to get involved on the pitch? It's a fairly low-level game so there were no stewards or anything, I assume the...
