    Level 3 Promotions

Level 3 promotions are in the process of being sent out. I was lucky enough to receive an email informing me of my promotion to level 3! (pending meeting all the necessary requirements)

    Penalty or not? Clip attached

    1) Red card - no problem 2) No decision needed. Defensive free kick would be harsh, and the penalty is even harsher. Players and the linesmen want a reaction - a big cut of the grass, and shout of "no!" and the game carries on.

    LOTG Hard Copy

FIFA let them down? hahaha. That's quite amusing.

    Club Marks

QB. I was also a referee appointment secretary. Instead of being asked to send club marks to the RDO to determine finals, we were instead asked to provide local area nominations for country finals. Whilst one would look briefly at club marks, so much more governs whether or not a referee would...

    Club Marks

Some fair points. Couple of comments from myself though. "- turn up on time ( if with AR`s you can travel together or aim to arrive together - meeting point within close proximity of the ground )" Don't agree with meeting point within close proximity of the ground. With a team of three, if all...

    Booking for Dissent

Very valid point UKColt. I have three points to consider: 1. At this age, players should start to understand/learn that referee's will attempt to use the captain to assist them. 2. Using managers is difficult logistically speaking. Whilst captains are often close by on the field of play...

    Seb Larsson

Ryan - a player making contact with the ball has no bearing on this decision. The player has committed an act of serious foul play. His foot is high with studs showing, and although in your words he 'tapped herra', he COULD HAVE caused serious injury. Thus, it's a red card all day long.

    Booking for Dissent

If you have lippy kids, manage them accordingly, in line with your tolerance level. I would recommend the use of the stepped approach. If the player is guilty of consistently providing 'low level' dissent - go through the steps. A quiet word, a public word, a public word with the captain and...

Sky Sports - Referee programme last night

Agreed Deusex. Thought the programme was quite funny to be fair, but when the elite referees say that GN and JC did really well, when in actual fact, they weren't anything amazing, doesn't quite sit right with me

    Manager refuses to shake hand

When you blow the final whistle, stay in the same vicinity. People will come up to: 1) Shake hands - perfect, thanks, wish them well for the season 2) Not to shake hands - don't react. They are looking for a reaction, and by not giving it, you show who the bigger person is. 3) Have comments /...

Who was playing him on then ref?

When you get the chance, get the back four's (usually four) numbers imprinted in your mind. I.e. after the first 5-10 mins of a game, I can tell you that LB-CB-CB-RB are numbers 3-4-5-6. Makes it a lot easier when they ask "who was it ref" - I can say number 4 or signal with four fingers.

    League Cup Final - Bio

    1) Yes, bios are pretty standard for cup finals (with an accompanying pen pic sometimes). Usually, they are a question format "when did you qualify", "where is the best place you've refereed". If I was you, I would go for something along the lines of "A level 7 referee, who qualified XX years...

    Sock Tape

Hence, why I "would make reference of the fact in my post-match debrief" - i.e. "YorkshireReferee, I noticed that numbers 8 and 7 of HOMETEAM had the incorrect socktape. Whilst I will not reference this in my report, please be aware that this is stipulated in Law 4 - i.e. socktape must be the...

    Sock Tape

As an observer I would make reference of the fact in my post-match debrief, but my report will not contain it i.e. there are much more important things which will develop you as a referee for me to write about.

Junior/Youth When to use your voice...

Not a big fan of 'no foul' - I'm a fan, of 'steady'. If there is pushing 'watching the arms / arms down'

    10 yards

With all due respect @CapnBloodbeard for a free kick on the edge of the penalty area, I am taking full control of it, straight away (i.e. I am on top of the ball, and communicating clearly). I will not be allowing a quick FK. Why makes things hard for yourself? I'd rather a few moans (if any)...

    10 yards

Coaching advice for free kick management: Seen a lot of "10 yds for me is 12 steps etc..." on this thread. All I would say, is that when marking out the 10 yards, you want to adjust the size of your steps, so that you use 10 only. Spectators, managers etc... will be counting your steps, not...

refsix - the Smartwatch and Mobile app for Referees

Good idea - wouldn't use it though. When cautioning or even sending off a player, I want to keep eye contact for the majority of it. The only time eye contact would break, is for me to quickly input information into my notebook. Using this watch, I spend most of the time looking at my watch...

Open Age Teams with a reputation.

Think nothing. Go into every game treating it as if you know nothing i.e. referee the game in front of you. Often, a game you think will be tasty, isn't. The game you think will be a walkover, is tasty.

Junior/Youth First game of the season

Cutting the grass is a tick in the box for communication (or match control) mainly. Personally, I like it. As a level 4, it tells my NAR that I do not think it's a foul, and certainly do not want them coming in with a flag for a foul. Mainly though, one would use it on the persistence front. It...
