    The ref exam

I am a tutor. The exam has 42 questions. It is basic law - IDFK/DFK offences (what's offside for example?), know offside law itself, how do we restart play in different scenarios, know cautionable and sending off offences, lengths of halfs, number of players etc.. I can't give you more...

    Comms Kit for Sale

Adam - apologies to spoil the party here, but the only matches permitted to use these in England are the National League and upwards. Any referee below the level of 2a, therefore, should not be buying these as they simply cannot be used in any of their matches.

    Players in glasses?

How else do you think I got my 3?!

    Players in glasses?

It's simple really. Sports goggles, and plastic lenses = good to go. Glass lenses - no way. I'm a glasses wearer myself and played for years wearing glasses. Many balls in the face, and many pairs of glasses, have lead to a good understanding here!

    When is a substitution complete?

CapnBloodbeard makes a good point. Know the laws. Jim - say you are an asssitant carrying out a sub. Player comes off, and the player coming on is waiting at the halfway line. He doesn't enter the FOP, and goes straight down the touchline to take a throw-in. Is this allowed? Have a look at the...

Lee Mason - Southampton v West Ham

On the whole Lee Mason did well - the KMIs he mostly got correct, although the Mark Noble challenge should have been dealt with differently. I do feel as though he wasn't concentrating on active play at that point (thinking of previous incidents/injuries) - and thus, didn't deal with the...

    MLS incident

    1) When there is a close "is it offside or not" call, you either see the assistant either raise the flag to indicate it is, or often you see the assistant perform a 'walking the dog' flag technique to indicate it isn't - quite difficult to describe in text. Joining this, you would hear verbal...

    MLS incident

Good observation Ciley. 'Cutting the grass' is not an unauthorised hand signal. I can confirm this, following PGMOL advice at a recent Level 3 Conference. Advice you have obtained may have resulted in your slight misunderstanding, as it was perhaps incomplete. Cutting the grass signals should...

    MLS incident

Not for me. Went down far too easily. Big cut of the grass whilst penetrating the penalty area and play on.

    tempers flare... dont get involved

Self-assessment is one of the best ways of learning Richard - well done. A couple of points from me: Don't know how close you were to the incident, but if there is a hard tackle and players on top of each other, I'm sprinting over whilst on the whistle - that way, your right on top of the...

    Referee Questionnaire

I did your questionnaire Tom, and wish you the best of luck with your EPQ. Just a note though, you are highly unlikely to find referees who have used VARs - it is only just being ruled out, and this is on the international stage. Thus, the very limited number of referees who have used it would...

This was always the intention of the Whole Game System. WGS may make it there eventually!

    Ball pressure

Each to their own indeed. Whilst myself and my senior assistant sort out teamsheets etc..., the junior assistant can check the balls etc... This is quite normal practice in the UK.

    Ball pressure

Buying a ball pump and a pressure gauge saves you so much hassle as a referee. Balls in my game are always at a value of 10 on a ball pressure gauge (inset) - and this is quite a popular value across the refereeing community. "AR: What do you want it at mate?" "10 please" - job done.

    Where to publish article?

Very impressive read RefJef. Sad to hear about that referee who quit after his first game - if only he could of had a mentor there to help, we may be in a situation with one more referee still with us

Congrats Mr Mo! Glad you've enjoyed it. 54 games is fantastic experience, and evidently you are enjoying and doing well. Have you thought of going for promotion?

    Reading vs Fulham (Teamsheet)

Hence my comment "And this is the match programme team sheet, not the official team sheet" :)

    Reading vs Fulham (Teamsheet)

Good hypothetical question. However, it's quite simpe. As the referee, you cross the name of the list with both secretaries present. Anyway, they've named 8 subs when they can only name 7. And this is the match programme team sheet, not the official team sheet.
