    Striking YC/RC?

Technically, I'd be more inclined to agree with the commentators that it's a push rather than a strike. Either way, I'd consider that to be excessive force prior to the 2016/17 Laws. In the 2016/17 Laws, there is no choice in the matter - all deliberate contact to the head or face with the hand...

    "Mine!"

The only answer I can think of is that they don't know the Laws and think it's an offence because referees have always given it and players have always asked for it. The lack of knowledge beyond the basics is quite astounding at the lower levels of the game (which is also where the vast majority...

    Striking YC/RC?

Only a Sith deals in absolutes.

    Striking YC/RC?

I can't think of any. The only time I think that striking with the ball out of play could be a caution is when there is a mass confrontation and an opponent is nudged out of the way with the arm. However, I'd say this is probably more likely to be considered pushing.

    "Mine!"

I've seen this same group give a direct free kick for this.

    Goal Kick

I probably wouldn't caution for this unless it was being done to eat up time or had been done a number of times already. There are no tactical considerations as the ball is not in play.

New Law - "misconduct...against...match official – a direct free kick or penalty kick"

That document is also available at the end of each Law on the IFAB website if you find viewing in a browser easier than viewing a PDF. Edit: the section we've been talking about in this thread is located here.

    "Mine!"

Yeah I have too plenty of times for things like that, or someone running up behind an attacker on a through ball and shouting leave it and then the player leaves it, or calling for the ball from the other team. I definitely haven't done it for a player simply saying "mine" or "leave it" when...

    Striking YC/RC?

The way I handle it when the ball is out of play is still: careless: public warning or quiet word, depending on the severity reckless: caution for unsporting behaviour excessive force: send-off for violent conduct. However, the bar for what constitutes excessive force when the ball is out of...

Offside Restart Location For Early Call

In the 2016/17 FIFA Laws of the Game, the restart location for offside offences has been changed from where the player was standing (ie in an offside position) when the ball was played to where they now interfere with play, interfere with an opponent or gain an advantage from being in that...

    "Mine!"

I've had players complain about not putting a name on it in every adult game I've refereed in the past two weeks I've been back. I thought this myth was finally going away, but it appears it may be getting worse in my part of the world. My retort is usually "that's a myth - it's only an offence...

New Law - "misconduct...against...match official – a direct free kick or penalty kick"

There is no contradiction in the body of the Laws. It states: That's completely clear to me. Dissent is a cautionable offence, committed against a match official. The restart of play for any cautionable offence is an indirect free kick if the restart for this offence is not mentioned...

    HTTPS (TLS certs)

Free TLS certs are available from https://letsencrypt.org/. Is it possible to have one of these added to this site to ensure that all data sent by users (posts, usernames, passwords) are not sent in plain text? I added one to a webapp I was running for an office football comp and it took less...

So, I feel like I became a poorer referee as I got older....

I agree entirely. If there is no chance of advantage, play should be stopped immediately. However, once doubt starts creeping in, the response time can get slower which can lead to decisions not being given. A late whistle is the only way to break the cycle, rather than simply deciding "it's...

So, I feel like I became a poorer referee as I got older....

I effectively signed up to post a reply to you. I rejoined after a number of years away from the game, and had my first games this weekend. They were just some suburban men's games, but I really enjoyed them, and apart from one minor discretion fail (I probably could have given a player another...

    Back After A Long Break

Hi all! I'm a referee from Australia. I've been away from the game for a number of years. I've recently returned midseason as I've been flaking a bit lately on some of my other fitness-related activities I'd taken up. Refereeing is probably the best motivation I've ever had to run for more than...
