    Apparently .....

Had this from the other side of the coin, was a club lino for a local senior side just after I qualified. Player (built and looking like Ross Kemp) comes over calling me a f***ing cheat with his face about 5cm away from mine after calling him offside correctly for about the 3rd time. As a 16yo...

New referee, can't keep up with game.

If you are fairly new to football its going to be pretty hard to play it let alone officiate it! Reaction time will come with a bit of experience, but the best advice I have for you is watch/go to as many games as possible and watch the ref as well as the game!

after two assessments my promotion season is blown

Thanks mate! Main reason I did the course (as well as coaching qualification) was to try and appreciate the mind of the assessor and get a feel for what they want. Can't commit myself to being a very active assessor due to supply/contrib commitments but was nice to get one under my belt and hope...

after two assessments my promotion season is blown

Interesting to see the way the new assessors have adapted to the new system. The 'Summary' interests me, when I did my assessors course at the start of the year that was seen to be to summarise the entire assessment not used as the place to put everything you've seen down. Did my first...

Used them three times now, can't recommend them highly enough!

    Water bottle goal

When its a thrown object wouldn't matter who you are and where you are. Admittedly weird situations bring up the more obscure rulings...

    Water bottle goal

Massively playing Devil's advocate here, not necessarily something I'd do: The water bottle has presumably been thrown down by the GK at some point during the game. Under Law 12: "hitting the ball with a thrown object (boot, shinguard, etc.) counts as an infringement" (Under Handling the ball)...

    Promotion - how's it going?

Reliably informed that this year is the first year in a while where even if you meet the 5-4 criteria and are put forward by the county FA you won't necessarily be promoted. The FA currently have too many L4s in some areas and this is their way of limiting numbers alongside stricter demotion...

Australian Referee moving to the UK

I wouldn't get too excited. In a similar case to yours where the referee came from Poland he was placed at level 5 and put in for promotion to Level 4.

Open Age First game of the new year... First ever 3 card trick

If you want to give out 6 reds a game then so be it, you'll be crucified and hated at any level you officiate. Refereeing is just as much about common sense as it is following a set of objective laws.

Open Age First game of the new year... First ever 3 card trick

Personally, I think you've done the right thing. By law, yes it's a red. But you allowed common sense to prevail. Players at that level have swearing listed as their second language. In regards to your match control, a straight red could have caused havoc, players at that level do not expect...

    Watching football while refereeing

I would say it would start to become more difficult at L4. Your appointments officer will only take a certain amount of closed dates on MOAS for personal reasons before he starts to get annoyed.

    Mass Confrontation

I stuggle to comprehend how the senior assistant is a L4. What is he doing?!?!

    Promotion and 6-5 6-4

I think it has to be your decision, I've done it this season and by all accounts it has been a successful season. The one thing I will say is that you must feel 100% ready for it, any lingering doubts and I'd avoid it. It is a massive step up from L6 standard!

laying the ghost of the henry penalty blunder

Oops sorry I was mistaken, rarely a rule that is ever enforced. If it was I think you'd find every penalty retaken!

    First assessment on Sunday

To be fair to Brian I also read the assessment and was a bit critical of a few things. In my opinion if this were to be moderated it would not get an 85 as the wording of the assessment does not reflect the mark given. For example to give 4.0 for teamwork where it seems there is no evidence...

Do you remember giving your first red card?

Mine was a fairly simple double yellow, both for dissent. To say the player was annoyed would be a bit of an understatement... Only a few days later did I find out he had actually enjoyed a 10 year career in the Premier League...
