    El Clasico Referee Interview

I think there were 2-3 missed cautions for Real Madrid players in the first half but I don't want to criticise the ref too much as I think he was on a hiding to nothing before a ball was even kicked tonight and overall he generally did well in an extremely challenging match. Real Madrid were a...

    Bristol City Sunderland

I had nothing better to do yesterday so watched this game for some reason. Not sure there's enough there for a foul for me, but as soon as the referee gave the foul I thought it was a clear DOGSO.

    Bilbao v Rangers

Shirt seemed to be made of a poor material to rip that easily. Not sure there was much in it for me.

    Hearts v Dundee Utd

Michael Stewart has never been my favourite pundit but his referee bashing seems to have got a lot worse this season, to the extent it’s almost concerning how worked up he seems to get about it. I can accept that watching this incident in the ground live before seeing any replays he might not...

    Hearts v Dundee Utd

I wasn’t entirely convinced of a red watching it live with the replays they showed during the game, but when they showed the angle from side on at half time (the one in the Twitter comment) that was enough for me to be satisfied.

Diego Simeone - Athletico v Real Madrid

That angle is far more conclusive. I’ve no issues with disallowing it now, having seen that.

Diego Simeone - Athletico v Real Madrid

Agreed. Does it hit his standing foot? Maybe - but there’s nothing conclusive from any angle I’ve seen. As Willie Collum said recently after a couple of incidents up here, you need 100% conclusive proof to overturn a factual decision like that.

Scottish VAR Review - March 2025

I agree that it doesn’t show the official in the best light this month. However if you’re going to do a programme like this then you can’t just ignore wrong decisions and never talk about them. Those first two clips that are discussed were always going to be included because they were such key...

    Is blatant holding SPA?

Any act of fouling a player is technically unsporting, so I don’t buy the “unsporting behaviour” justification that some referees use to give a yellow card for in these situations.

    Everton v Liverpool

I think this game was slightly different because Oliver was due to referee it on the initial date before it was called off (ie well before the Arsenal red card). If someone else was then appointed then no doubt one of the tabloid newspapers would run a “Michael Oliver AXED from Merseyside derby”...

    Celtic Vs Bayern

I’ve still no idea what the original onfield decision was. I had half an eye on this game in the pub on Wednesday night so only saw it when the VAR was reviewing the incident. After the OFR the referee seemed to signal for a dropped ball (as if he’d given the penalty and then over turned his...

    David coote

Just for balance I’ve been at a few games up here that Craig Napier and Lloyd Wilson have refereed since they both came out a couple of years ago. They got abuse at points during these games but it was never homophobic at any point.

    Dundee United v Rangers

What’s even more surprising in this incident is the Dundee Utd no 4 (Holt) receives no sanction at all. You can debate whether or not the red was justified (it’s not IMO) however Holt does more than enough to at least receive a yellow.

    Motherwell v Kilmarnock red card

I’ve always felt Chris Graham has been a decent ref whenever I’ve seen him before. Fairly steady - nothing spectacular but never one for dropping a howler either. Probably one of the better officials to have made their way to the top in the last couple of years. Overall Friday night wasn’t a...

    Motherwell v Kilmarnock red card

Agreed but I don’t think that happens here. The hand goes in the chest (with minimal force) and I don’t think it’s really contact with the neck. I can see why the referee thought there was neck contact in real time and gave a red, but to stick with that decision after reviewing it shocked me.

    Who supplies flags?

I would agree with previous posts still recommending having a set of flags with you even if they never end up used, especially when you’re on the line. It’s always good to have a back up in case the referee forgets theirs or they break or whatever. They don’t have to be expensive ones though -...

    Who supplies flags?

No club ARs in Scotland. Some grassroots refs will take flags to give to a coach to indicate ball out of play, but personally I’m happy to just have them raise their hand/shout/anything else to get my attention. Club Academy rules also state both teams should be on one touchline with parents...

    WGS closing

For match admin I think it’s great. It took me approximately 90 minutes to figure it out for my first game this season but since then it’s been fine - far quicker than the old extranet as well. Plenty people said it was a nightmare for clubs to get players registered on during the summer though.

Rangers v Hearts end of game

Yeah I think it was pretty much as you described it. After the shot was hit he probably thought “that’s it time’s up” before realising there might be a VAR check for the handball claim, so couldn’t “properly” blow for full time, as such. It looked messy but it was straightforward really. There...

    Liverpool vs Aston villa

They just don't bother with that kind of stuff, and if they tried to bring in anything like that then I don't think it would work either due to how 'tribal' certain things are in Scotland. Referees can declare a conflict of interest if appropriate though - main example in recent times has been...
